Rav4, Liberty, or Escape. Which would you choose to pull a small pop-up camper and why? Or why not?

I chose a V6 Rav4, 269hp, 3500lb tow capability and 20 city/27mpg hiway when you're not towing, what's not to like!

quick;
I too, would rather have the Rav4 as I like the Toyotas. I already own a Camry and a Tacoma and have been served well by them. The Rav4 seems to be rather scarce in my area (used, that is). Can't swing a new one at this time.

I've located a 02 Liberty 4wd with 94k miles for $7200. 3.7 V6 and good tires. It seems to be in great shape. No scratches or dents and the interior looks new. I drove it and it runs great. There are a few Escapes around but none as clean as the Liberty.

krochus;
My camper is only 8' and is very light. It won't be used for any off-roading. It will be used mostly for pulling the camper and a spare vehicle. The Liberty has plenty of power to handle my camper. I currently pull it with my Tacoma 4 cyl. and the Liberty has more go than it does. I don't know how it will compare in gas mileage though. I doubt it will do as good as the Rav4 though.

More comments, please! If you've had any experience with these vehicles I'd like to know what you think of them.

With the popularity of the 2006 and later Rav4, it's not surprising used vehicles are in short supply, the V6 models were hard to find when I bought mine new 9 months into the new model year! Harold's thread below gives you an idea of what to expect for fuel economy while towing, I only tow a 2500lb boat locally with mine, haven't been on any highway trips yet, have a small travel trailer too, but haven't towed it yet.

I've been getting 20 mpg / U.S. gal. with my Tacoma 4X4 2.7, 4 cyl. while pulling my camper and I was hoping to get that or better with the Liberty. Maybe not? Well at least I'll have room for passengers when we go on day trips. My camper looks to be about the same size as Harold's.

My wife and I have owned two Liberty's;  A 2003 and currently a 2007.  Mileage has been pretty much as predicted.  The 2003 did get between 21-22 consistently on the highway.  We've not taken the '07 on the road yet.  Local mileage is consistently between 17-18.

I cannot speak about the '02 models, but there have been a couple noticeable changes between the '03 and '07, both positive.  The first is in the driver seat position.  The '03 seemed to lift the driver forward as if you were canted toward the windshield.  The '07 position is an appropriate, comfortable position.  Second, regards the transmission.  The '03 didn't know what gear it wanted to stay in at around the town speeds.  Not so with the '07.  The transmissions on both models shift smoothly and strong.  The engine has more than enough power for probably any circumstance.  Merging into traffic is a breeze.  Rolling at far above the posted limit would not be an issue.  Torque is plentiful.

No complaints with anything else.  Both Liberty's were/are nice vehicles.  The '03 was traded for the '07 because we had the chance to upgrade to a newer model with 0 % financing.  We know that the mother of a mechanic at the dealer bought the '03.  We see him at service intervals and he reports that his mom enjoys the '03 and has had no problems.

Last summer we considered purchasing a small camper.  We learned that the Liberty with the 3.7 and auto trans has a higher towing capacity than our Ranger 4X4 or Explorer, both with 4.0's and auto trans.

The Suzuki would have been an option if there had been any in my area. I did see one earlier but it didn't stay on the lot long.

I bought the Liberty. It has several miles on it but it is clean and runs good. I'll have to get a hitch for it. It is going to have plenty of power but the mileage might not be great. I thought the price was right so I went for it.

Thanks to everyone for their input.
