How do you tell if gun left the factory a pistol or a rifle?

I live in Kalifornia , We cannot import a contender pistol but can import a rifle . Is there someplace to go to find out how it left the factory ?
I have the opportunity to by a frame at a resonable price but it is comeing from out of state .

You use to be able to email Tim P at T/C and he would look it up for you.  Since T/C did away with email, I would give them a call and ask for Tim P.
