Disclaimer:  Double check anything I say on the DNR website.

Short Answer:  Yes you can hunt with those rifle calibers in a pistol.

Long Answer:  Indiana just recently changed the gun laws regarding firearms for deer season.  The big change is that they allowed pistol cartridges like 357 mag, 44 mag, 454, and others to be used in rifles.  Last year most of the hunters in Indiana went crazy buying lever action 44's & 357's.  There is even a loophole that allows the 458 socom in rifle form and some guys are using AR-15's.  Indiana made a sloppy attempt at squaring away the firearm regs for deer hunting, but oh well.  I'm not totally complaining, because I am very happy to be hunting with 44 mag handloads rather than $3 a piece sabot slugs.

It still doesn't make sense that you can't use a 308 rifle, but you can use a 308 handgun.  Just seems to me that if you're going to allow high power rifle bullets, it's best to allow the use of the guns most guys can place accurate shots with, but they didn't ask me.

I checked with the dnr and after 1 I dont know and 1 I am not sure give me your number and some one will call you back. I finally talked to some one that said it is legal. There riffle law is nice but I cannot figure out why the max length leaves out the 460 and doesn’t just use the straight wall handgun cartages instead?
