New BLR in 358 winchester. Loads

Just got a BLR in 358 win caliber. I am looking for some loads. Specifically for deer/elk use.

Any suggetsions would be appreciated. If known please list your velocity.

Also been thinking about the Hornady 200 grain spitzers.   Has anyone used these for pigs, bear elk or something bigger than deer?  Iwill be trying the 225 Nosler partitions but if they do not shoot in my 358 Win then I will maybe try these.  I want a relatively robust bullet for bigger than deer game.

Any inputs?

Had one of these until a good friend twisted my arm until I sold it to him. This friend hunts muley's and moose, the bullet is the 200gr Hornady with 50.6 gr of WW 748 pusing it to 2500fps approx.

If you need more bullet go to the 220 gr Speer. Sorry I don't recall the powder used but Varget should work fine

When I had my Model 88 in 358 Winchester my favorite load was the 200 grain Hornady Spire Point seated to 2.65" over 49 grains compressed of IMR3031 for 2600 fps.  This was a good deer and black bear load.  For bigger stuff there is a lot to be said for the 220 grain Speer over 48 grains of AA2520 for 2450 fps.

I have had good luck with 47.0 grains of IMR 3031 with 180 gr Speer FPs and, for recreational shooting (ie, reduced recoil), 26.5 grains of IMR SR4759 with both the 180 gr Speers and the 200 gr Hornady RN.

I've had a number of .3258's but now only own one a Browning blr. I use it for bear.  try aa2520 or imr 3031. I get 2360 with 53/grns of 748. No bear has ever walked after being hit. I shot one moose and 2 elk with it, same story.

Forgot, I use .250 grn speer hot core and some times the .225 nosler, old style at 2450.

There is nothing wrong with the 250 gr Speer if you don't mind having  a lot of the bullet sitting into the case. If you need a 250 gr bullet I suggest you try a Hornady RN. It will not shoot as flat as a 200 gr SP of course.


ie You could set up to shoot 3" high at 100 yards and still be only 8.5" low at 300 yards with approx 1400 ftlb left for the 250 RN calculated for MV at 2250 fps

I also use a BLR in 358 , when i was loading the Hornady 200 RN i had worked up to 49.0 of IMR3031 for 2520 fps,accuracy was excellent. This summer i switched to the Hornady 250 RN and worked my way up to 46.0 with IMR3031 for 2320 fpsthe 250's shoot a little tighter then the 200's I will stick with the 250's . I always work up my loads in the heat of summer and next summer i want to try the woodleigh and swift a-frames in 250 grain.

I've got the Handloader here. Hopefully I won't get sued by them for copyright violations.

Footnote of the loading Data. All loads were done  using WW cases and Fed 2125 primers. Rifle  for test was a Ruger Hawkeye  22" barrel

    200 gr Hdy RN        Norma 201            52.0gr      2,753 fps
200 gr Barnes TS            TAC                 52.0gr      2,749  "
225 gr Sierra GK                "                   49.0gr      2,552  "
250 gr Hdy RN                  "                   48.0gr      2,404  "

In his particular rifle the 2O0 gr Hdy RN gave the best three shot group with .78" followed by the 250 gr Hdy RN with .95"
The worst group was Sierra GK with 1.47"
The Nosler PT was second from the bottom with 1.44"

I found it regretable that the 200 gr Hdy SP wasn't tested
I am not sure whether or not the longer spitzer types are all that suitable for the .358, they would have to be set back into the case a fair way for OAL

The Norma and TAC powder was the only loads given in the article

 I've had 5 .358 rifles but only have a Blr .358 now I killed 27 bears with it and the .250 speer. I used 748 for 2370. I've been in a body cast this past few months . My entertainment has been pestering the guys on the forums with many questions. and I bought a couple of guns on GunBroker. My wife had a fit ! I got a copy of the August issue of handloader and after reading this forum ordered a Ruger Hawkeye in .358.Should be here next week. Don"t know what I will do with it as my Blr does everything I want.
   Many of my friends hunt bear,elk and moose with their .358's and are constantly amazed at it's killing power. A deer doesn't have a chance when hit with a .200 grn hornady. We don"t shoot much beyond .250 yds and most shots are much closer.

Country boy sorry to hear you are in a body cast--that does not sound good-- i still like H335 overall 220 Speers in my 18.5 ruger or 200 RN corelocks
225 Sierras in my 22" or 250  rn Hornaday-- varget also works but has not been as accurate or the 250 Speer
