7mm-08 ... ?
« on: June 13, 2008, 03:45:21 PM »
Looking at a new Handi 7mm-08 rem. at the gun shop($225.00)... Just curious...  what are the limitations for this caliber? What kind of distances can you shoot and cleanly take a deer, and what is this biggest animal in North America the 7mm-08 could handle? I would definately be using factory ammo. Thanks Ya'll...

I'd say 350 yards for deer if your accurate. Black bear and elk should be no problem at reasonable ranges and good shot placement. Great round, low recoil............

Great round!!!!!! That will be the next rifle I own. With the 7MM bullets you can load it down to about 90 grain bullets for Groundhogs and up to 160 grain bullets with the right barrel twist for Deer. Not to mention it is very fast and flat. Dale

An excellent round!  Have used the 7mm-08 alot, and it's older brother, 7X57 Mauser, even more.  They work alot better than most would think.  Again proving you don't "need" Magnums to kill a 130 # whitetail, or a 600# elk.  It'll shoot farther than most people have any business shooting at game.  I have 3  7mm-08's at this time, so I guess I like 'em. ;)  DP.

I probably wouldn't hunt moose and I would certainly want a bunch more ooomph for the big bears, but everything else would be fair game for the 7mm-08 with a good bullet.

By the way, $225.00 is a good price for a new one.  They are moving the new ones up to $249.95 around me now.  DP.

I don't know how much leade the Handi has so seating depths may not be a problem with a 160gr bullet which seem a bit heavier to me then you would want for deer size critters

The 7mm08 , with the right ammo will cleanly harvest anything you may want to eat.Now for the big things that want to eat you, tht is a very different story.the various 139/a40's are great for dear and most reasonable shots for elk, for moose go to the 170gr and enjoy.   Doug

I second that, Doug.  160 on up works good for the heaver stuff whether out of a 7mm-08, 280 or anything else 7mm.DP.

Thanks a bunch ya'll. The 7mm-08 sounds like a winner. Oh and since this is the best place for info, did I read correctly from the H&R website that they were closeing the plant in Gardner? If so, what kind of future will these rifles have? What have ya'll heard about this?  ???

Berger is coming out with some 140 grain bullets.  Those would be perfect for the 7mm-08, you could take deer past 500 if your gun shoots well enough.

Providing you can place it in the vitals, the Berger will deliver 1000 ft-lbs past 700 yards.

H&R/NEF production is moving to the Remington plant in Ilion NY, which Remington is spending $14.3M to renovate, it's all in the 5 page thread below.
