Herters .401 Powermag
« on: June 12, 2008, 04:38:28 AM »
Hello guys,
I am usually on the contender forms, but I do look here now and then.
I love my single actions but will admit I have become addicted to the T/C's.

This last week end I went to a fun match at my club. I finally got to shoot my 401. I have had it for four years or so. Wanted one since I first saw it in a Herters catalog back in the middle of last century. Seems they were about 60.00 dollars back then. I paid 4 times that for mine and think I got a good deal for the great shape it is in.

Right after I got it I found a guy who said he had a hundred or so brass , I paid for them an a month later I got some reformed Midwat .41 Mag brass (poorly done I might add) wish I had just done it myself.

Anyway Saturday I loaded up 50 cases with light loads and went to the fun shoot. I shot at silhouette targets both full and partially blocked, Had a blast.

The range officer who was directing me on which target to engage said" my but that thing is accurate"
I was able to pick up the gun at the whistle and fire 6 shots almost as fast as most of the guys with autos and I only had two misses out of the 48 shots fired.

Thanks for letting me brag about a gun I have wanted for almost 45 years and finally got .
 Neal

Great score on a great gun.  We got one in trade at a gun store I worked part-time in and the owner had me research the ammo as no one there knew anything about the gun or cartridge.  I think the brass could be formed from cut down 30-30 but I don't have the references available to check.  I think a auto-rim 10 mm would be a great idea.  I load a 41x1" that I make with a 10 mm trim die and it is a great round but the .401 bore would make more sense in general.  Lot of bullets out there in the .401, not so many in the .410.

I have aquired 2 of these fine pistols.  slug your barrels I have thought of having a mold made for mine if I remember correctly mine are .403 and most molds are .401    They are kind of ugly with that massive hammer and grip and sight  but I like em. I believe mine were made in 66 and 68  Herters were a dang fine firm  I grew up drooling over their catalogs for many years I have 3 or 4 old orange and yellow catalogs around here some where. I think the last catalog was in 74 Parker Industries out of NY was another favorite in 68 to 70. That good old gun control act of 68 took them out of business if i remember right. Herters got caught with some old feathers that were from birds that had been put on the endangered list and that took them down.

Yea, I loved to look at those old Herters cataloges too. They also got sued over a patent right violation on their copy of the conabear tarp as I remember. Could have been afew others as they seemed to have their version of all of the new technoligy.
