Weatherby Vanguard Problem
« on: July 22, 2003, 05:18:32 AM »
I have a Weatherby Vanguard in .300wby with a synthetic stock. I purchased this rifle from Wal-Mart 2 years ago. I have put about 150 rounds through this rifle. I pulled it out of the safe last nite and found that the safety won't engage. I took the action out of the stock and  removed the trigger mechanism. I then replaced the mechanism and the safety still will not engage. I did this with the action both in and out of the stock. Is there any aftermarket trigger mechanism that will fit this rifle? I know it was manufactured by Howa, will the Timney trigger for a Howa fit? I plan on contacting Weatherby today also. TIA. Mike

Ok, take the action/barrel out of the stock and looking at the rifle with the action being on your left and the barrel on your right, look down at the trigger group.  Right behind the trigger you will fine a screw with a nut on it and some type of glue.  What you want to do is loosen up the nut and turn the screw counter clockwise a little pit and then try the safety and see if it works.  I'm assuming it doesn't work when its out of the stock either, is that correct.  This screw is for the creepl, but I do know that if you turn it clockwise to much the safety doesn't work.  Just try it a little bit at a time.  If that doesn't work then set the screw back were it was at the beginning, don't forget were that is.  By the way in front of the trigger group is another screw/nut and that controls trigger pull.  If you want to lighten the trigger pull up then turn the screw counter clockwise.

Get back with us and tell us what happens.

Thank You Dbuck!

I moved that screw about 1/16 of a turn and problem solved! I called the Weatherby tech line and they never mentioned adjusting the creep screw. The techie only said that the screw on the side had to be tight for the detent to work right and that it couldn't possibly be anything else. The trigger pull is adjusted as light as I can get it and it is still heavy and still has a lot of creep. I think that I will still look into an aftermarket trigger. Thanks again. Mike

MF, you might want to take it to a gunsmith and have a trigger job done.  Tell him you want a nice crisb 2.5# trigger pull with no creep.  Should cost you around 50-75.00.  Ask him before hand what the price is and how long will he have it and when you pick it up try the trigger and if you don't like it don't except it until he has it right.

Hello MF. You may already know this, but your Vanguard is actually a Howa rifle. The are excellent. I own three of them and plan more.

Sometimes it's easier to find parts for the Howa rather than the Vanguard. Good luck.
