Help: Need a sub-model for a 99 please.
« on: June 07, 2008, 12:47:58 PM »
Dear Savage Guys,

I have been hunting for 35 years, and I have decided to simplify my life and try to go to just one handy deer/black bear/maybe elk rifle.  I am  interested in getting a Savage 99 (which I would scope), but there are a large number of submodels out there (submodels A thru L?), and I am not sure what submodel I should be looking for.

Here is the configuration I want, but frankly I  am not sure if Savage even made a 99 with these specs:

        Caliber:  .308 Win.

        Wood:  Walnut

Checkering:  None, or cut (not impressed)

Grip:  Straight (That's probably the tough part.  I hate a pistol grip on a lever rifle with a scope.)

        Cheek: Monte Carlo (if possible)

Magazine:  Either internal, or the detachable magazine.

Now, I would have thought that this would be a fairly standard set of specs, but in looking throught the resource books and info I have, I can't seem to find a submodel that fits the bill.

Does anyone know whether Savage ever made a 99 like this?  And if so, what submodel desigation is had?   (Kindly don't recommend a .300 savage or a .303 savage or a .358 Winchester etc ???.  I am a .308 die-hard as an all-around cartridge.)

Thanks very much for all advice.

Do you mean something like this?  I think that's the only model I've seen in 308 with a straight grip but it doesn't have the monte carlo stock.

thanks J-hawker,

   Whew, that is pricey!

But, happily, someone just sent me info on a cheaper model.  In 1972, Savage reintroduced the model 99A, in .308 win.   I think it has all the specs I listed, plus a schnabel forearm.

Now I just got to get more info on this model.

Thanks, Mannyrock
