« on: June 01, 2008, 12:21:51 PM »

I'm not at all certain what you are looking for.  What does "quality loads" mean?  To reduce barrel wear, load to lower pressures and do not let the barrel get too hot by letting the barrel cool between groups.  Then, clean the barrel well; these steps will reduce barrel wear.  So will shooting less...but that isn't very practical.  Can you elaborate?

My .257  AI built on a pre-64 Win M70 action and Douglas Premium barrel likes the following load:

 Winchester brass
 CCI Large Rifle Primers
 100 gr. Nosler Partitions
 50 grs. IMR 4350

Load chronographs at 3200 fps and shoots 5/8" three shot groups at 100 yards.  This load has accounted for quite a few antelope, whitetails and mule deer.  ;)

Mine was built for a varmint rifle and I like the 87 gn. Serria bullets with a max. load of H-380.

My 257 started out as a Winchester M-70 featherweight. I had it Rebarreled installed by Shilen, 24" #3 contour. It also has the mag spacer removed to allow me to adjust my overall length a bit.
           Remington brass
           CCI 200 primers
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
110 Accubond /RL-19 powder @ 52 gr./ 3095 fps
            group size per 5 shots 5/8" @100yds
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
120 Nosler partiton /RL-22 @ 51 gr./ 3052 fps
             group size 1" @100yds
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also have a reduced load using 120gr Remington corelokts purchased when they closed them out a number of years ago.
IMR 4350/ 43 1/2 gr @ 2743 fps 1 1/2" @ 100yds.

I bought this rifle new in 1984 never amounted to anything worthy of keeping, lousy accuracy with everything. I decided to have Shilen install the new barrel in 2000 and have never looked back.
It has accounted for Wyoming Antelope and Wisconsin Whitetail with the 120 Nosler. Maybe going to try the Accubond this year. (So many toys so few tags) CRASH87

I have a 257 WBY Mark 5. I've put 140 rounds threw it so far. My rifleing is in fine shape.
I plan on taking it on a hunting trip sometime close by. In my state is a shotgun state.

First off I wouldn't worry about barrel wear, if I'm reading this right.
Guns are both tools and toys,,,,to have fun and be proficient with them, you have to use them in my mind. With that said, with a good barrel to begin with, you should expect 2-3000 rnds before accuracy starts tailing off. Thats been my experience so far, but another 2-3000 rnds before I call it unacceptable. That depends on the use of course,,,varmint rigs are less that in all respects. 1" groups aren't bad but not great either,,,when you say everything you tried, and thats the best it does with various powders and what not, then I might look at the stock bedding and other possibities The key is not to shoot so fast as to get them hot as stated in Lone's post. But let me put it another way. I figure any piece of hunting equipement that cost 25-50 bucks a year is fair enough for my pleasure. Take a good pair off hunting boots for example, they last me about 3 years,,,see what I'm driving at? For big game hunting guns, if I have to rebarrel after 5-10 years, so beit. Varmint barrels get shot far more often (in my case) and cost me more, but it's one of acceptable expectations too.  I shoot it enough to have intimate knowledge of any gun's capabilities.  I like to play more with mine in the off season.

Beyond that if you are looking for somebody else's favorite load with a particular bullet, there's a are fair chance that it'll mean squat really.  Barrels/guns have their own personalities, and the only way to find it out is to shoot it with various load components.
That's not saying you can get lucky in asking though!

I'm using 120grn midway store brand bullets on top of 47grn reloader 19. I put bullets in the same hole. mixed headstamp brass and winchester large rifle primer. I also have some load tables I can send you if you are interested.

My standerd 257 roberts didn't like the heavy bullets. I have a 10 twist Pac nor barrel on a 722 action. The Hornady 87 gr with N-550 will make one jagged hole at 100 yards at 3130 fps
