For those contemplating a new .22 rifle...
« on: May 28, 2008, 05:29:08 PM »
Outdoor life has an article in their June/July 2008 issue..entitled  "The most accurate rifle we ever shot"..

They didn't qualify it as either rim or center fire..just most accurate ever..probably the accu-trigger didn't hurt the score either !

What is it ?  A Savage Mark II BTVS...

I was under the impression that it was probably made at the old Lakefield Arms plant in Canada, which is owned by Savage...
Feel free to correct me where I am wrong; although I only brought it up because of it's apparent ability to shoot with or outshoot some pretty costly iron..

Hey, i'm NOT putting the gun down, Savage builds some great guns!  And yes, Savage rim fires are made in Canada.

...And to think; this same Mark II action is available in models starting @ $191 MSRP..probably $150  at Walmart..must be embarrassing for some of the
   "high priced spreads"...LOL
With  Marlin being sold to big green..my next rimfire may have an Indian Head label...

As far as Walmart .22, you get the same rifle you would buy from anyone else, except for the Wally-World special 10/22 Ruger, which has apparently proven to be
a better shooter than the regular 10/22s.
Savages ? guess, like anyone they can have a "bad un" slip through !

Hmmm I wonder about their statement  ??? as there are a bucnh of folks who shoot benchrest for fun with .22LR rifles and Savages are used but not as many as the Mossbergs or CZ's and those CZ's sure shoot well in fact I was playing with an earlier (1965) Brno Model 2 last Sunday but only at 25 meters and it shot several on hole groups with a couple of cheap ammo types. those being CCI Blazer and American Eagle AE5022, it also shoots the Winchester Sub Sonic ammo made in Australia very, very well indeed. The rifle as a Weaver K3W Steel lite scope on it. Although the smallest group of the day was shot with the Winchester Subs through a 1956 BSA Super Sport Five and measured 0.198"

I have no quibble with those guns you mentioned. Having owned the older Mossbergs and Winchesters, I know they are good shooters, and I have a CZ452 right now, along with a Marlin 880SQ, both of which I am sure can shoot better than I can. I have an Anschutz also (my third one)...
I only mentioned it as I stated..because I was quite surprised that Outdoor Life, after the thousands (probably) of rifles they heve tested over the years, that a humble
Savage should be called..the most accurate rifle they have EVER tested..
I figured anyone looking to buy a hunting .22 might do well to consider one; especially if on a tight budget !

 love my savage 110 30 06 ..
but the walmart mark 11 cost 127 bucks.. the cz452 cost 369.00 at gods country..
the mark 11 was over priced and the cz is under priced..
that is my opinion having owned both in the last 2 weeks..
love that cz 452.. i  could never ask for an more accurrate or better made gun..
the kinda gun you want to stay in the family..that is my evaluation..
