Model 36 Chief's Special Target Model?
« on: May 25, 2008, 03:00:25 PM »
I recently picked up a model 36 chief's special target model (so said the store clerk) with adjustable sights....anyone know anything about these?  Mine has a 3 inch barrel and is blued.  It shoots like a dream...very accurate.  I picked it up at a pawn shop while looking for a model 60.  It looks just like a current model 60 but it's .38 only.  Any info or history on this firearm would be appreciated.

Hello
The reason the clerk told you that it was a special gun was that it has adjustable sights and most model 36's all came with fixed sights. The chiefs special target versions were marked 36-1 and as the model 50 at Random and with a very Limited Production. they made them from  1950-1999 and the total Production of them was 1,740. I assume yours is the later model which came back out In 1989 and this model was the 36-6 with a full Lug Barrel. It is worth having factory lettered and can bring as much as a Third more in Value than a standard fixed sight model 36. These target specials were made in the later dash-6 series from 1989-1990 only according to my reference Information. I hope this helps, Hammerdown

Wow!  You are right on!  My gun is marked model 36-6.  I will not part with this shooter...it is remarkably accurate.  I need to find some Uncle Mike's Combat Grips for it as it is now wearing a bantam concealed carry grip and it's a little barrel heavy for this grip.  Thanks for your help, Hammerdown!

Hello Kmystery
I have a 3" Model 36-1 and they all Look a Little nose heavy with the 3" Barrel. I placed a set of boot syle grips on mine and it shot well with them as shown. Regards, Hammerdown

Hello
I got these from Big Buck enterprises. The Owners name is Doug, and the set shown is a set of Boot Grips in Rosewood for a round Butt S&W revolver. He will sell over the Internet and ship to your door. I Believe I paid $59.95 for the Ones shown and they fit very well. I hope this helps, Hammerdown
