Which one should I buy ?
« on: May 24, 2008, 06:58:29 AM »
I want a .243 to carry in my truck for coyotes etc. I like the slender forend on the Rugar MKII, The
Remington 700 seems to shoot better but is heavy, and the Browning A-bolt II has too short a forearm. are there any other suggestions you might make to me ? sure would appreciate it.

Check out The Savage or Stevens. They're great truck guns and are mostly pretty accurate.

I bought two of the Stevens/savages and both were a piece of @#$%. Factory loads would blow out the ejector and freeze the firing pin, best they would do is 6" group. Sold them to a gunsmith who thought he could fix them after I had sent them to Savage. By the way Savage service is great.

Remington makes 2 different SPS'S. The first is a Varmint barrel that is 26" long. The second is a standard contour barrel and I think it is 24" and is much lighter. I have the former with the Varmint barrel in the 243 pictured below. It shoots great. Dale

How about a BLR or Savage 99?  You live in Pa and find them dime a dozen.  What kind of range are you talking?  Both are accurate to 300yards and are very light.  The BLR has a clip but the Savage has a bullet counter so if you shoot one or two shots days apart you'll know how many rounds are in the gun at a glance.  (The Browning comes in 7-08)
Dale, I hope your wife doesn't read these posts! :-[

Remington Model Seven Predator. It's full camo with a 22" fluted barrel. Mine in .17 Fireball is an honest 0.5" gun at 100 yards right out of the box with factory ammo. The only thing I've done to it is lighten the trigger pull from the 5 pounds it came with down to 2.5 pounds. I have about 350 rounds of the factory ammo I'll be popping prairie dogs with soon.

If you're driving a Dodge truck, buy a Savage or Stevens.  If you're guiding a Chevy, Ford, or Toyota down the road, buy a Remington.

 ;D

Those Dodge trucks and Savages were made for one another.

Ruger ultralite?  Browning micro hunter?

My wife has a .243 tang safety Ruger ultra lite which is glass bedded and free floated with a very nice trigger job.  The actions been smoothed and it's a slick working action.   I hand load for the rifle and she shoots it quite well.
