Cast in a 7mm-08
« on: May 22, 2008, 06:02:54 PM »
I posted awhile back asking if any of you had used cast in a 7-08 and didn't get much of a response.  I have used the soup can boolit, and haven't got it to shoot worth beans more like shotgun patterns really.  Tonight I was using boolits I cast from a  Saeco 071 mold and didn't do too bad.  All targets were shot at 50 yards.  These were shot using a Bushnell Trophy 3-9 scope, Saeco 071 boolit sized to .285 and lubed with 2 coats of Lee Liquid Alox.  Alliant 2400 powder using a pinch of dryer lint as a filler lit with a standard CCI large rifle primer.  I think that if you guys want to use cast in these handi rifles you are going to need a bore rider design, at least that is my take on it so far....more testing to come.

Amos

Looks like you have a good handle on this thing , around 15 to 15.5 grains seems to be the sweet spot . Have you tried any loads with out filler to see what your groups do ?

Several from this list are also over there.  Great group of people.
Caution:  Reading over there will cost you money --- Money to buy casting equipment :)
I personaly have not shot a jacketed bullet in 10 years accept an HMR17.

(I do have to shoot 200 condom covered bullets in my 22-250 barrel to break it in :(  )

I'm already a member over there, and am borrowing the Saeco and a Lyman mold from a member on cast boolits.  I only cast 19 or so good ones with the Saeco thinking that I would cast more with the Lyman to use...fat chance.  I forgot about the Handi rifles having such short throats, and the Saeco is the only one that doesn't have the bottom of the boolit go past the neck of the case which I think is why the soup cans don't work for me.  I need to cast a few hundred more of these bore riders so that I can continue testing with filler/no filler, different powders, and stretch the range out to 100+ yds to see how they group.  I might get a group buy going over there for a 6 cavity of this design with a bit bigger meplat if you guys want to get in on it.
