T3 with Laminated stock
« on: May 19, 2008, 11:05:16 AM »
I'm considering a Tikka SS/Laminate in 300WSM, anyone have the laminate version of this gun?  Also, I heard that I should only consider a long action cartridge because Tikka is only available in long, and that a WSM is a waste. I don't understand the reasoning behind this, will the balistics of a WSM in this gun be different than in a true short actiion, like a Sako?  Assuming of course, we are comparing the same lenght barrel.

Thanks

Their only point is that a WSM can be chambered in a short action. Instead of building a short action, Tikka just uses a longer action for everything. This just means the action is longer and heavier than it really needs to be for a WSM. It does not affect bullet velocity. Whether a little extra weight is good or bad is up to you. You are making a similar choice for a heavier laminate stock over a lighter synthetic stock.

As for Tikkas and WSM velocity, you should check out these posts from last September. http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,125446.0.html

I have the laminate on my 338 Win Mag, and love it. Yeah, it's a little heavier than the injection molded stock, but in 338, that's a good thing IMO.

I say spend the extra coin and get the lammy.

I have a T3 stainless/sythetic .270 wsm . I wish I would have went with the laminate just for looks........and the extra weight would be nice I believe for stand hunting(I don't stalk much).

As far as the action..........it is so smooth and operate's so well I can't imagine it being a noticable difference over a short action. I know I can't tell the difference between mine and my buddy's Kimber .270 wsm(as far as action length) .

Thanks everyone.  Is it true that laminated stocks require a sealant to prevent splitting, especially under the butt pad?
