Tracker throats
« on: May 16, 2008, 09:41:48 AM »
Okay, I've got my medium frame 2" tracker 44 mag. and I'm happily loading away with cast bullets for it.  Well, the other night I get a wild hair and break out the old calipers and check the revolver's throat diameters; several times because I can't believe what I'm seeing!   :o  They measure anywhere between .420 (-) and .425!  Is this normal for Taurus?  Does anyone know of a 'smith who can open them up/uniform them?

You DO REMEMBER that I warned you Taurus quality is the pits these days and that only their customer service or lack there of is worse right?

I know Bill, I know...  But my ol' daddy always told me I had to learn the hard way.  And I had this 44 itch I had to scratch!  Well, I'll put a couple hundred rounds through it and if everything still works I'll see about getting the throats reamed if I can't make it shoot.

If your accuracy is bad... then I would worry about it.  Other than that...  who cares?  If it ain't a match pistol (and if you are shooting match with a 2" .44, I need a lesson from you!)  Then I don't think that throat difference is gonna make much hardships on your accuracy.  I guess that just based on perfectionism... I could see myself wanting to correct that though.

But now you gave me an itch I need to scratch... gimme a minute.

OK checked it out.  Taurus M444 ultralite...  all six dead on .430, not one thousandths difference.

M605---- all dead on at .359, not one thousandths difference.

Raging bull....  all dead on at .454, not one thousandths difference.

All my taurus revolvers are dead on.

Are you keeping even pressure on you calipers?  even the slightest off angle will throw it off.  Also, spin the calipers with slight pressure to make sure that it is on the widest part of the throat.

Absolutely correct, I'm not even working on real accuracy yet, just trying to get a couple hundred rounds downrange with those swagged lead bullets I bought.  With that fire sight I can keep it on paper which I consider pretty good for an old man who can't usually see the sights anymore!  'sides I believe a CW only has to be good at 7 yds!

I probably won't worry about it until after all my function firing is all done. Then, I can't find a load that gives what I want, That will be the first thing I have corrected!  But I wouldn't say I was a perfectionist... just because I lay awake at night worrying because the throat isn't within .0005 of the nominal bullet diameter doesn't mean anything...

And this is 'spose to make me feel better?  Are you saying I got one that came off the assembly line on a Monday or Friday?  ;)

I tried real hard to do all that, but these thoughts usually strike me after I've done about six 12 oz. curls...  However, the bullets I'm using mic right at .430 and they don't come close to fitting through the throats.  I'll check them again but right now I'm gonna ride my murder-sickle!  Another party this weekend!  :)

I guess the guy running the reamer at the factory had some 12 oz curls before getting to your revolver....
