Any way to make the Encore lighter?

Are there any gunsmilths out there who are willing to make the Encore a lighter gun.  I love the gun but am looking for a way to make it more fun to carry.

I have a barrel from BB that is as light as they will make but the action by itself is heavy.

I would  not mess witht th frame. To lighten you need to look at stocks, barrel and scope weight. Composite stock are lighter than wood or laminate,tappered-flutted - short barrel and  compact scope with aluminum bases . Nylon sling . What caliber are you looking at?

I have one in 7M-08 with a 24" barrel in synthetic.  I figured it was too lite.  Which equals more recoil.  If you have a hvy barrel on it instead of Thompsons standard barrel, I would imagine you have added a couple of pounds. Also, you could go with a shorter barrel . . . or like Graycg said go Contender. :D

I'm cravin' one of those G2 209x.45 muzzies.  Prolly kick the crap out of me but would surely be an easy rifle to tote all day (not that that's likely to happen  :-) ).

Currently I have a heavy .223 factory barrel and a .17 HMR Bullberry barrel.

The .17 is as light as bullberry will make it and it is 20 inches long.  

My scope is a B&L 4200 6X24 40 mm

I was considering a light barrel 30-06 for backpacking but even the light .17 HMR is heavyer than I want

30-06 huh?  I would get one of the TC standard tapered 24 inch barrels in this chambering then have a competent gunsmith shorthen the barrel to 16.5 inches or so and re-crown the muzzle.  Then like someone else above said use aluminum scope mounts and a composite stock and forearm.

I don't know how much you want to spend  or how lite a rig you're looking for but check out virgin valley custom. The sell some supper light stock sets as well as carbon fiber wrapped barrels. They can probably get you in the 4-5 lb range sans scope no problem.

It only wieghs 7 lbs. with a heavy barrel. How much lighter do you want it to be. Compared to the rest of my rifles my encore is like a feather. JUST RIGHT! :)

Right now I have the synthetic stock and forarm on it.  As I mentioned it is a .17 HMR by BB in the lightest barrel they will make.  The barrel is 20 inches.

With the scope a B&L 4200 it weighs 8lbs 13 oz.

That is HEAVY for a tiny barrel that is meant to be a walk around rifle.

Couple of quick questions. What is the muzzel diameter, is it a straight varmint taper or does it follow the factory sporter type taper. When you say synthetic do you mean the factory stock or one of VVC's custom carbon fiber stock sets? What is the weight of that scope?

another thing to think about is...there is a big difference between .17 and .308 bores.  I can tell a difference between my two carbine barrels (223 & 7-30), when I put one in each hand.  They are still lighter then my stock 7mag BDL.  Just something to think about.  If you want a lighter barrel, get a larger bore. :lol:

The stock sets are available from Virgin Valley Custom Guns. They are located in Hurricane, Utah. Not sure on price. Go to their web site I know it is listed on there.

That Bushnell 4200 scope adds quite a few ounces in and of itself.  Your mounting system might be also adding 4 ounces or more.  Check out the weights of Leupold scopes and you'll find they weigh a lot less for a given power than almost anyone else.
The Weaver base (but not Weaver Rings) and a set of aluminum rings can chop off a good bit of weight also.  Between scope and mounts, you could lose a half-pound or more. :grin:

Your scope weighs well over 1lb. You can trim that down considerably on any big game gun by using a lighter, lower powered scope. I have 2 custom barrels for my Encore, one is a 16 1/4" .250 Savage, the other a 20" .350 Rem Mag. Both are heavy taper barrels but they feel light and easy to carry in the hand. The weight is balanced between the hands when you shoot and the muzzle doesn't go "whippy" on me.
  I say pick your caliber, get the barrel, have it cut short, research your scope choice well, and it will definitely be light enough to carry all day. Sean
