The Green Hornet Shoots Again---Range Report
« on: May 10, 2008, 03:58:00 PM »
It has been a while since I had the Green Hornet out to the range but today I spent 5 hours out there. Most of it with my ML. I did however have sufficient time to shoot the Green Hornet and I think I have discovered the needed 'fix'. The action lock-up has been perfect from the beginning and it always shot well with the fore-arm off. Then I bedded the fore-arm and tried different tightening torques to try and 'tune' some accuracy into the beast. No way! It shot all over the place. So today I took the spacer out and tightened it to 15 in-lbs. IT GROUPED!!!. So the fix I will try next is to sand down the fore-arm face where it mates up with the spacer so that the spacer completely clears the frame. I think this will do it. Also I am going to bed the fore-arm lug to make sure that no axial or torsional motion of the fore-arm is possible. I know this little beauty is going to shoot eventually because it shoots well without the fore-arm on.

I intend for this to be my 'go-to' walking stalker this summer for groundhogs so I will keep my fingers crossed.

I hope this helps someone else who might be experiencing similar problems.

as a suggestion  (please!!!), sand down the flat section of the forearm spacer on a belt sander, do this instead of sanding down the forearm. I highly suggest you ALWAYS make adjustments to the least expensive and most easily replaced part in fitting anything. That way if you take off to much you can easily fix or replace that inexpensive replaceable part and you don't ruin the more expensive (core) part for another application. This is very important in gun work but extends to all almost fitting....<><....:)

I'm almost certain that my accuracy problems stem from the spacer. I took it off and and remove a little material from the flat portion. It also had a very tight fit on the barrel. No free floating there. I opened that up with some sandpaper wrapped around a large wooden dowel. It shoots like a different rifle now ;D Maybe next weekend I'll get to shoot again. Dave

I finally got the little Hornet I bought last month to the range today. Good accuracy with a basic 4x scope. Only problem is that it's an older Handi with an ejector, and not an extractor like my other guns. The first time I put a live round in it, then opened it back up, it threw the live shell about 7 feet nearly breaking a lamp. Today at the indoor range, I forgot on the 3rd round and it threw the empty about 15 feet bouncing off the wall behind me. I guess back then they put the same spring on a hornet as they did a 45-70!
