Range report-Midway Dogtowns
« on: May 10, 2008, 04:29:02 AM »
After doing some tweaking on my rifle I returned to the range this morning with my remaining 32 gr Hornady factory loads and some sample 34 gr 20 cal Dogtowns. Right away I noticed the Hornady's were shooting better than they have before. I was having accuracy problems. But the Dogtowns weren't even printing on the paper. I found out that they take a total different path than the Hornady's. I had to use most of my reloads just to sight in the dogtowns but while doing this I noticed that some of them were going through the same hole. I walked up to the target several time just to verify that. I had 4 small batches loaded up with different oal. The shortest ones were used just to get back on paper. My loads consisted of new Remington brass and rem 7 1/2 primers and 27.3 grains of IMR 4895. The load in the pic had an overal length of 2.305" but the ones I had at 2.286" also had excellent accuracy. I wish I could have given it a better test but I didn't expect to have to completely re-sight in my rifle. Anyhow-I'm pleased. Back to the reloading bench. Dave  BTW this group measured .523" at 100 yds

I am not sure what's going on with mine. I had it out yesterday sighting in the new Mueller scope and was all over the place. I fianally gave up as this was the fourth gun of the day .I had this barrel shooting solid 1" groups last yr at 200yrds but put new scope and thumbhole stock on it and am worse than square one now .Will go completely thru it and try again I know the barrel is capable.  I beleive I found my problem in the forearm. When I first got this rifle I had to get under the tip of of forearm with a small screw driver and and use that to pry the forearm off. At that time the first goup was the best and the rest spreading out to 3-4 inches. I had a rubber washer on the mounting screw and thats the only place the barrel made contact until the plastic spacer which was a very tight fit on the barrel. I took it off and flat sanded it and opened up the barrel channel. The forearm slips on and off nicely now and it shoots like a totally different gun. Its shooting great. Got some more stuff loaded up and maybe next weekend I can shoot again. Good luck with yours. Dave

That is a nice group. ;)  Looking forward to the next report now that you're back on paper.  I will surely try some of the dogtowns when I start reloading for the 204.  Good luck.
