new 38-55 hitting the range on the weekend
« on: May 08, 2008, 02:05:16 PM »
I just seen the Dr. on a follow up after neck surgery which was on Dec. 5 2007 and he gave me the go ahead to start shooting but like he say light recoil.
I think 9.5 grains of unique and a 260 grain cast bullet should fit the bill and i will were my past mag: shoulder recoil pad also
I went to the indoor range to-day with my 1911 and I don't think there is any more room for improvement 15 yards 2 hand hold unsupported and the X ring was gone .I still have room for improvement but what a difference in the shoulder  and neck muscles as far as being strong I have no problem holding the gun out at arms reach
The pain 60 percent better and still room for improvement
I will keep you guys posted on how the 38-55 shoots

The gun did well for the first range trip,I had a few loads made up all using 262 grain soft lead boolets with a BHN of 13.
I set up at 70 yards and added a small 1x4 scope just to see how the gun will group I have no intention in using a scope but will be switching back to a peep sight.
I tried IMR 26.0 out first all group excellent 1 1/2" maybe 15 rounds total
next out IMR 27.5 not bad but did have a fly er or 2 in the pattern
28.0 grains IMR right back to a nice 15 shot group 1"
I loaded a few with 10 grains of unique powder gun did not like the powder at all
I was surprise no problems at all with empty shell or action popping open: I have say I did close the action very gentle and it lock up fine
The IMRr and the cast 262 wheel weight air cooled but even at 28. grains of powder showed no leading at all.
I think it will be a excellent whitetail gun for the up incoming season and I love the recoil.)NONE)

I would love to reduce the trigger pull I bet 6 ilb easy

I see Starline now has both long and short 38-55 brass and they say they will keep it stocked. Kurt

I ordered the short brass for smokeless loads for now and .381 cast is no problems loading in the rifle
I use .380 diameter
