  Glanceblam;
Possibly a revolver problem ? I have never had trouble with mag shells ejecting from my rifles, but my Taurus 941 is very stiff ejecting. GB suggests that the
    chambers need polishing...and I suspect he's right !

Mine was geared more to the first lots of ammo when the WMR was new. I think that they were getting 2,100fps but had to tame them down to the 1,800fps range to solve sticky extraction problems

I thought the classic 40 grain bullets were loaded in the 1900 fps range now out of a rifle.

That could very well be. I always stuck with the 40gr bullets rather than say the 33gr +V because I figure that the 40gr will have a bit more punch on the large groundhogs or Red Fox.

UPDATE

I installed a Rifle Basix trigger and put a Mueller APV on a Marlin 982VS CF (carbon fiber). A couple pictures - one of the rifle and one of a target I shot at 100 yards. The day I shot the target it was blowing left to right pretty stiff at times. I tried to time it between the blows. There were other types of ammo on the same target and none of them came close to the WW Supremes. The next best was Rem 33 grain V-Max, but they did not perform as well. I really wanted the WW 40 grain hollow points to work, but they were miserable out of my gun some where around 3" @ 100 yards.

I was interested in how Marlin could put a carbon fiber stock on a .22 and have any one able to afford it, so I went to the web page and found out that it looks like carbon fiber but is fiberglass reinforced synthetic.  That makes more sense. For that matter a carbon fiber stock is kind of unnecessary.  Fiberglass reinforced synthetic will be strong and will take the weather well, and will be nearly as light as CF.  You will enjoy that rifle.

Yep, it is a carbon fiber pattern on a fiberglass filled synthetic stock. The model is still 982VS CF. It kind of grows on you.

Found this at a pawn shop this weekend.

$155.00, going to do the bic pen spring trick to the trigger and change the cheap scope.

A Marlin 925M w/laminated stock and el-cheapo scope. Took it to the range to check the sight in, then went into the woods and scrambled some diggers.

The 925M s on the left, the other is a Marlin 917V. The 917 17hmr is better out past 100yds but the 22mag knocks um down better, it likes CCI 30gr HP best so far.

I think you did well with the $155 on that M925. If I found one, I would not have gotten the M982 I did. If you look back you will find the reason I bought the M982 was because they messed up my order on the M925 and sent a 925 instead. I could be wrong, but that looks like a regular birch stock. I have tried 6 different 22 mag ammo and mine likes the Win Supremes best. I do not know they will perform on woodchucks yet. I have read they do not expand very well.

Sorry for my ignorance but I own an older (non-marlin) rifle that I suspect may benifit from this.

The Bic pen spring thing is for the Marlin T-900 triggers. If you have an older Marlin with out the T-900 trigger or another kind of gun, then this will not work for your rifle. Do not give up hope. I have lightened many triggers on other guns including older Marlin 22 bolt action guns. Depending on the design of the gun trigger, you can replace the trigger spring or find one of lighter tension. You can hone the trigger sear too. I have either replaced the trigger or lightened every rifle trigger I own with th exception of an older model Mossberg (a 340K I think). No matter what I did the trigger pull is still very heavy. Good Luck and Good Shooting

Here is a link to the trigger mods http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=197546

The stock is definately laminate,

In this pic you can see the plies of the veneer, the wood does not contrast a lot from layer to layer but is is a plywood stock.

That picture makes it plain - it IS a laminated stock. It makes it an even better buy.

There is a link right at the top of this page (rimfire) under FAQ that tells about the trigger job.

I have a Marlin bolt action 22mag.  I bought it when I was 18 and it makes a world of difference on groundhogs.  The model I have looks just like this one  http://marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/22WinMagnum/982VS.aspx  but it's not called a 982VS.  There's several groundhogs that wish this rifle wasn't as good as it is.
