With as many people that live in this state, you'd think there'd be more than four of us on this site.

Jim, I think we need some good controversial topics to get people involved? Just not much happening in Illinois right now unless you count the political stuff. And most are already tired of that?

The IL forum has only been up for a month or so, give it time.  If you want to feel good about it go look at the Iowa forum.  I looked in the "cougar" post and there were a dozen different people who had posted.  Just wait until  deer season rolls around.

I think this forum has gotten off to a great start.  I really appreciate the "regulars" here already and and we have exchanged some enjoyable phone calls, (met my close neighbor) and look forward to more of the same. Nice people on this forum!
Fishing is starting to heat up, but I am admittedly the most experienced worst fisherman in the world.  The big high-adventure sport I am looking forward soon - FROG GIGGING.  My neighbor (the Soil & Water District conservationist - by the way, they finally got their funding a few days ago!) got me started into gigging a few years back, and I now have a Mobley mounted on a modified St. Croix pole.  (Deadly high tech frog gig - hand made)
In February, when it's 10 below, I like to get some frog legs out of the freezer and have a feast.  My wife sautees them, we have some venison too, (Upper Mississippi River Turf & Surf I call it) a wild rice casserole and a nice bottle of wine.
The only bad thing about frog gigging is being in the most bug infested environment on earth at 9:30 pm and wearing a light on your forehead!
CIVES ARMA FERANT - Let the citizens bear arms.
POLITICIANS SHOULD BE LIMITED TO TWO TERMS - ONE IN OFFICE AND ONE IN PRISON.... Illinois already does this.

I used to gig frogs all the time, in the summer months but, since there is a limit on them now, I don't?

I really hope that SDS-GEN is correct but can't help but think that our 24,500 membership is hardly a drop in the bucket as compared to the population of the lower 48 not to mention Alaska, Hawaii, and our friends abroad.

I thibnk it's lead a horse to water. If you have to drag it there it's already dead and you're too late. ;D

I didn't even know this Thread was here.  I checked the states listed a few months back and didn't see anything for Illinois.  Today I was scrolling up the list and ILLINOIS caught my eye.  I am here in the Heart of IL area.  Kurt is up near the WI border.

I have tried to get a couple of co-workers on here and I think they lurk from time to time.  I send them links that I think they'd be interested in.

We just got this forum going recently so it's no surprise you didn't see it. Welcome, I'm hoping there are others that will find it and add to the threads.

We went twice last year, once in early June and then again in Sept.  This year my hunting buddy and I are headed to Hooker, OK for the GBO annual p-dog shoot.  I thought it'd be nice to attach a few faces to some of these names.  Not sure if I'll make it to SD or not.  The price of gas is a killer.  Plus my daughter & her family might be moving back to IL from ID.  If they do, then that'll be the remainder of my vacation time, helping them move.  From last year, we did learn that an earlier trip is better than later.  More p-dogs and they weren't as skiddish.

i live inCrystal Lake (far Northwest suburbs of Chicago) and hunt in Illinois with my gun. i usually draw out at Lowden Miller State Park, which is south of Rockford.
Hope to hear from more hunters!

Welcome Andy, how's the hunting there? At Lawden I mean. I hunt in the shawnee national forest every year but am looking for a place closer to home to go bow hunting. I live in Cicero a bit south of you.

Welcome Andy!

I live probably 4hr south of you in the central part. Like yourself, I have left the long guns at home for four years now and use those single action revolvers. (cept for them Ki-oats   ;D)

Yes, Lowden Miller has part of the old tree farm. it has both really thick forest area with very steep gullies up to a pretty open area of Mature hardwoods. It is also really convinient, because you are allow to put up a treestand or ladderstand for the whole season, both the Bow season and the rifle season. if anyone is looking to hunt there, drop me a PM and i can give you some areas to look.
Last year, i drew the first season and 5 minutes into it, i had 6 does standing in front of me. I was hunting last season out of a ground blind and they were 25 yards in front of me. Since i had only been hunting 5 minutes, i let them pass and wouldn't you know it, they were the only deer that i saw that weren't going like a bat out of hell! Oh well, that's hunting. I did go back out during the second season in th esweat line and got to go all three days i went. i word of warning, there seem to be a lot idiots there hunting... but i guess there are on any public land....

That's the whole problem with public land and you have to expect more idiots since it's so close to Chicago.
I am very interested in hunting there, PM sent.

I was lucky enough to draw tags for this area in the late '60s early '70s. Have taken several deer there. Even went to see the statue of Blackhawk, later in life, while working at Byron nuke power station?
