Scope help for S&W 460 ?????
« on: May 04, 2008, 12:28:21 PM »
I just purchased a 460 XVR Hunter PC 14" Fluted Duotone. It should be here about Tuesday. Can someone suggest a scope that can take the recoil from this revolver?  I was looking at a Burris 3x12x32 and a Leupold 2.5x8. What do you guys thing?? Thanks in advance for any help

The Leupold is definately the nicest glass available with extended eye relief. I was contemplating one for my lever action on a scout mount.
I wound up getting a simmons 2x6 which for a third of the price turned out to be a very decent scope, better than everything but the Leupold I tested at the store. 45/70 is pretty brutal on scopes because of the light weight.

I would definately getter variable mag for a 460. You will appreciate the extra power when shotoing at 100yds or for load development. 2x is plenty for hunting.

I put a Weaver 2x scope in Warne QD mounts on my 500 PC Hunter (6 1/2" barrel). Seems to hang in there fine. It is very important to use something like Loctite on the scope in the mounts to hold it in position.

Are you talking about gluing the scope in the rings? I dont think so. If they are moving I think I would look for a better set of rings.

I don't know if Loctite is the same as glueing, but you can't clamp the rings tight enough, even as the rings squeeze down the scope tube, to hold the scope in place without help: some kind of roughness or a "glue" like Loctite. I don't see Loctite as a glue. If you want to release the scope from the mounts, it does so easily enough.

I have a Leupold 2X on my 500 with long eye releif. I have put three shots into a 3" target at 100yds with it.

I ordered a Leupold VX III 2.5x8x32 this morning. Now I need to find a quad set of picatinny rings.

Go check that site out.   He makes just about the strongest bases and rings.  I have a XVR and use four of his rings (and base) to hold a Burris down.   Hit the threads w/  blue Loctite and don't worry.   Mine has taken a pounding and never changed the zero.

I agree with Tom C. that something is needed between the ring and the scope tube. Even if the scope does not move fore/aft, it can rotate in the rings. I use clear nail polish in all my scope rings and have never had a scope move in any direction.

I guess that would work, but I have never needed to.  If you lap the rings and tighten them well you shouldn't get any movement in any direction.  There should be enough contact area that no amount of recoil can move the scope.  Also alignment is assured so you are not likely to mar or bend/break the scope from the mounting.

The weigand's come with small pads that you place in the top and bottom rings.  They have sticky backs so as not to move until you torque the rings in place.

Thanks Grouser! I place an order for a 4 ring set this morning and they have already been shipped. Hopefully they will be here Monday and I can put this thing together!

Well my scope came in and I got my Weigand rings. Cant use the darn rings. They are not high enough. Took off the rear sight and the scope still hits before it is seated in the rings. As far as I can tell he only makes one height. Any other suggestions. I want a 4 ring set.

Boy..  sorry to hear that..  I never even gave it a thought.   They fit my 2-7 Burris (w/his base) perfect.  Did you try calling them and talking about taller rings.  I've called them and they were very courteous and helpful.   If you get in a bind I had a guy from thehighroad.org tell me he could machine those rings for me.  If you get stuck I could dig up that email for you.

Jack said they don't make anything any higher. He said I could return them with the invoice. Hopefully I still have it. I will try something different. Its going to be hard to find a 4 ring set that will work.

If you get stuck...  Here's the link to the guys website  www.customizedcreationz.com...

He seemed to think he could make one of  the weigand rings,  or very simillar.  I've never had any work done w/him, but his website is pretty impressive.  (also have no idea of cost)

I purchased the 3 ring set first from weigand and then thought better of it and wanted a fourth.  I posted on thr and got no responses except from the customized guy.

There's a guy (redhawk1)  who helped me with some questions about my 460..  Maybe you should look him up and send a pm inquiring about his scope rings?   I dont know him except from his posts.  He is a hard core big bore handgun guy..   He's owned a bunch of 460's and 500's I think.    He's on here and also on thehighroad.org

Good luck...
