16 3/4" 45-70
« on: May 04, 2008, 11:13:28 AM »
So, I may have made my warranty nonexistent,

This is my 45-70 that has been chopped off at 16.75", cut with a copper pipe cutter and a hacksaw then cleaned up with a stone, file, and sandpaper. I sand blasted the barrel and then used Perma-Blue on it, this the first time I have tried it on sandblasted metal, made for an almost parkerized look.

I also sandblasted the receiver and tried to parkerize that a few weeks ago (first attempt), it didnt turn out how I wanted it, jet black, but instead it came out more of a brushed stainless steel look.  After looking at it tring to figure out if I wanted to re try the parkerizing or leave it alone, I figured I would leave it.  Also sandblasted the Weaver 82 rail.

I think it looks pretty good, it shoots the same as when it was a 22" gun, little more recoil though and a bit louder.

What do ya'll think.

I like it!!! It really looks great, but for fast handling and quick work I would suggest you try a straight stock (English style, also called a squire style). I think that fine compact gun just cries out for a nice straight wooden stock set....<><....:)

I have a set of the pallet wood stocks that I might screw around with at work, Cabinet Builder.  I think I will make it a straight comb straight grip stock.  I sure do like the synthetic stocks on it, its nice and light, probably could carry this all day deer hunting and not be worn out like when I carried the 32" BC a few years ago.

I figure this will make a nice loaner rifle or a camp gun.  If the weather isnt going to be nice and I dont want to take my 6.8 AR out bear hunting I will just grab this guy and not worry about it this fall.

Looks like a great rifle out to 100 yards or so. Dale

Very nice , if you want the Tupperwear look on a squire wood stock , you can paint it with the black spray-on bed liner , gives a nice look and does a wonderful job of offering a good grip surface even when its wet outside .

Interesting you posted this today.  I just got back from the range where I was messing with the new BC I recently purchased.  Turns out to be a nice rifle and easy to shoot.

At any rate I had the 32" barrel BC and also my little 16" TC.  Shot ten rounds of the same load from each rifle over the chronograph.  32" tube averaged 1964 FPS, the 16" 1567 FPS.  Difference of 397 FPS.

Lot of energy added by the longer barrel but the TC scores big for being handy to carry on a quad and some other uses.  Longer sight radius of the BC makes it a lot easier to stay on target.  They each have their place.

Keep the pistol grip!  If you like having better control of a long-gun with one hand.  I can't stomach english style stocks, myself.  What's your preference?  For a backpacking gun - in hog or bear country, I'd go for more control and versatile handling with one hand.

This is why military and LE guns always have pistol grips >>> more control!  (which I think would also be an advantage handling that stout .45/70 recoil too).

I bet you that thing is a "blast" to shoot!  ;D

I have a T/C Contender Carbine with the rynite stock and a Super 16 .45/70 barrel.  Talk about a fun little package - it makes my M1895G Guide Gun look big.  8)

Can you tell any difference in the recoil between the long and short barrel ????  Wondering about cutting the 22" barrel back to about 18" and if anyone has noticed a difference in the Kick :o.  Also thinking about cutting back the 38-55 from 26 to about 20.  Gotta play with it somemore to get it to shoot first. :(  DP.

I noticed a difference, because of weight, before it had pallet wood stocks and a sissy stick in the butt, 3/4" copper pipe filled with lead.  Now it is wearing the stocks from my hornet.

Now being much lighter the recoil is more, and with the shorter barrel it makes a heck of a boom.  Not a bench gun now, I dont know if I could do 5 rounds off the bench in a row, short range off hand work.

That's the same package I have.  Little rascals really bark don't they.  Mine is ported but don't think that helps a lot as the muzzle jump is extreme.  Between the 45-70 and a few other barrels it makes an easy rifle to travel with and covers all bases pretty well.

The BC gives a lot less recoil, I shot them both from the bench yesterday and the difference was very noticeable.

Well you inspired me to the same at the shop last night to my 45-70.I have a bit of experience with short barrels. For 30 years I had a Remington model 581 with a 16 1/4" barrel that was as accurate as my old match rifle.I also previously had a 1917 Enfield in 30-06 with 16 1/2" barrel that was a 1-2 moa rifle.Yes it was loud and from the prone position it would flatten out the grass in front of me for 3-4'.When I load for this cartridge I load lead bullets for 1200fps and jacketed at 1400 fps.And I will be putting a limb saver recoil pad on it as well.I just picked up an old Weaver K-4 I will be putting on it as well.

The first time I would show up at my club with a barrel that short on a rifle I would be escorted out and handed over to  an RCMP type guy.

sideline I had a Guide gun in.450 Marlin with the ported barrel and came to realize that  a.   I don't like the recoil,   b.   that I needed much better hearing protection.    c.   I hate straight stocks.   d. The Speer 350 gr.FN bullet couldn't be used in the .450 Marlin      e. glad to have sold it
