Banjo Minnow?
« on: April 30, 2008, 01:17:41 AM »
Has anyone used this lure? I'd like to hear some opinions and/or experiences.

I've been watching the commercials on the Outdoor Channel and the lure apprears to be something worth purchasing.

Yes,
Save your money. You can buy a lot of plastic's for what you pay for the banjo Minnow.
If you know how to bass fish just buy a plastic fish lure. It will catch as many fish as the Banjo minnow.

Ain't no better or worse than any other plastic. Get your presentation down in front of a fish, going at the right speed to get a reaction , and that's more important than what it is.
Spending more money never got the job done for me.

Thank you, for the replies, gentlemen!  :)

I've been bass fishing for many years and have had good success with Culprit worms of various colors, "texas-rigged" with a Tru-Turn hook. However, I thought there might be something different about this lure. Guess not, but no problem, I'll keep on catching them just the same.

Good fishing, Bowhunter57

the sole job for any fishing lure is to hook the fisherman once it is bought it has done what the maker made it to do. Whether or not it really catches fish is another matter.

You can make a surprisingly similar outfit using some Mann's SHADows, Tru-turn's Hitch hikers, ( a wire used to hook porkrinds to jigs) and some Gamakatsu Circle Wide red colored hooks. You can get by without the tiny rubberbands, I suppose. Just screw the hitch hiker into the SHADow (or minnow shaped soft plastic of choice) and place the looped end onto the weightless hook, making sure that it's pretty secure, yet "floppy". I use 30 pound superline, Either SpiderWire or Fireline. Works well!

Since I'm new to the board I'm looking thru these threads and this one I find of interest. I'll freshen it up and send it back up to see if anyone wants to add more.

A few years back my wife bought me the banjo minnow kit when Gander of someone had them. I took it with a smile and tosses it on the shelf. One day I took them out and started fooling around with them. Well, it took awhile but here are my findings. First, I could never keep the minnow on the hook after a strike. I found the little round rubbers to keep keeper in place were too big a hole to stay in place. Miss the set and the baits gone. Secondly, I lost the hooks with the keeper spring to northerns. I did like the idea of the rubber band the hooked thru the eye and went back to a slightly downturned hook point. Hook that rubber band on, slide it back to barb and presto, a VERY good weedless setup. Pretty soon, thru trial and error I found that the #6 hook, with the rubber band weedless setup, hooked thru the nose of 4" Senko style bait in rainbow trout color was the deadliest under dock skipping bait I had.

The shape of the hook with the slight downturn of barb for some reason hooks bass and you almost never lose one. I've never had a hook with a higher landing ratio. You can buy these hooks separately. I use the #6 and the one size bigger. If you know someone who has a kid getting braces have them pick up a couple of packages of 1/4" binders from dentist. You can even get them in color.

So this discourse is basically saying that tho the Banjo Minnow setup is an overpriced package, the hooks and rubber band weedguard are deadly. Not quite a circle hook but different than a round bend and I love them...and I fish constantly and in many different ways. For plastic it's the best hook, bar none.
