Ejector Notch?
« on: April 29, 2008, 09:38:17 AM »
should i cut a notch in the edge of the chamber so that I can pry out a casing in the event of it sticking?  it sounds like what some of you guys might have done.

what happened to the old delay spring ejectors like on my 1945 410?

I only have two out of about 40 H&Rs with the notch, don't really need it with improved ejector function, but it's handi if it does stick. Extractors have eliminated the need for it on current production barrels.

Dunno about the delay spring, I think maybe the ejector is just worn, it's not meant to work that way.

I look at this in two ways, shooting off the bench and hunting.

If I am working up loads for my gun where pressure may be a problem, I will likely be at the gun club.  I should have all of my equipment with me, including a cleaning rod that I can stick down the barrel to remove a stuck case.  If I get a case separation, I should have a wire brush of appropriate size to remove it.

If I have properly worked up loads for my rifle, I should not be having any sticky extraction where I would need an ejector notch when hunting.  I should have also tested all of my carry rounds in my chamber before going afield.

But let's look on the other side of the coin, let's say I found a load that is just so phenomenal that I don't mind having a stuck case once in a while because it can shoot the flea off a fly's back at 200 yards.  Do I make a notch or use another alternative method?  Some of the folks here have made the notch.  That is their choice.  For me, I have another alternative that I have used for many years.  I hunt with a fanny pack on.  It is great for a rest for prone, has my lunch and water in it, has a first aid kit, has matches, compass, fire starters, whistle, etc....but it also has an old military cleaning rod that comes in about 6 sections.  This cleaning rod and the few plastic jags I carry can double as a ram rod for my muzzle loader, can clean a barrel I accidentally stick in the mud, or can poke out a stuck case or remove a separated case.

Your choice.....

Steve :)

99% of all stuck cases can be knocked out just by dropping an appropriate size drill bit or piece of brass rod, or even a small bullet thru the bore, those options have been discussed numerous times before Fred presented the ejector notch idea. ;)

Thanks, Tim.  It's nice to know we have someone on here who can remember each of these little details.  I have read thru the Handi basics 3 or 4 times and STILL find stuff that I didn't know or more likely didn't remember.

Thanks,

Steve :)

I like the idea of carrying a drill bit or other small rod.  that's too easy to bother w making a notch.  thanks

I don't like the idea of dropping hardened steel cutting tools (twist drills) down my rifling, either backwards or forwards.
For bigger guns, I use a piece of 1/4" brass rod. For the .223, I use a piece of 3/16" drill rod that's rounded on
the ends.

I've used a section of 22 cal brass cleaning rod to do all kinds of "knocking" over the past 30 odd years...it's usually close by if I even suspect a problem with sticky case...usually with T/C and NEF but also with shotguns.  I also use cleaning rods because I ALWAYS have one of those around.  A drill won't hurt or scratch a barrel...argue-ably...unless you happen to have it chucked in a drill-motor, or have a brainphaht while doing it.  I sometime think we lock onto the minuscule and turn a blind eye to the really bad stuff...without even knowing it.
