They laughed till I made them eat crow
« on: April 27, 2008, 08:07:50 PM »
My neighbor Russ and I went out onto the riverbed to shoot today.  Out there you can set your targets up for as far as you want to shoot.  I drove my truck out and set up targets at 200, 300, and 400 yards.  As I returned to the bank we shoot from a couple of trucks pulled up and the drivers wanted to shoot as well.  We waited for them to set up their targets.  They went out and set a target up next to my 200 yard target.  Then they returned to the bank.  Russ and I got our carpet to lie or sit on, and a short saw horse we use as a rest.  Then we pulled out our guns, Russ shoots a Remington Bolt gun in .338 Ultra Mag.  I had my H&R Ultra in .223, the one with the Night Force scope.  These other guys admired Russ's Remington, then  looked at my H&R and started laughing.  One of them said what a waste for a perfectly good scope.  Then they leaned over the hood of their truck and started shooting.  After they had each shot about five rounds they came over and asked if they could look through my spotting scope.  They could not understand why they could not see their bullet holes through their scopes.  Neither one had a good group and both were shooting two to three inches low.  One of them said "Something is not right", then he asked how far out had I set up my target.  He thought it was awful far for 100 yards.  I informed him that my first target was at 200 yards, the second was at 300, and the third one was at 400.  We were using the 400 yard one first, I had another rifle I was going to use the 200 and 300 targets on later.  They looked at my Ultra and again laughed, one of them said "No way, you are not going to hit that target with that cheapXXX single shot".  I told them to "Watch the scope".  I then sat down and took my first shot, then I called the shot one inch high and one inch left.  The guy at the scope confirmed it.  I took my time and reloaded, then made my second shot.  I called it high and to the right, guy with the scope confirmed two inches high and three inches right.  On my third shot it just did not feel right, I told them I was off and not sure how much.  Guy with scope confirmed five inches low four inches right.  They were in awe of my shooting with the cheapXXX singleshot.  I was disappointed, I should have done better.  Then Russ shot a three inch group with his Remington.  After we were through I got them to take a couple of shots at the 400 yard target.  The first guy made the statement "My Browning can outshoot that piece of XXXX anyday.  Mr Big Mouth did not even hit the 12"X12" target, with four shots.  His partner did hit the target twice, one at the bottom edge and one top right corner.  The other two hit mud in front of the target.  They did not say anything else, they just sat and watched us shoot other guns for the next 10 minutes.  Then we loaded up and left.  Russ laughed all the way home, about how those guys looked after missing the target.  And how they shut up and did not say anything bad about my H&R after they shot.  The quite one did ask what kind of scope I had, and where I got it.  I told him "It's the rifle not the scope that made those shots, the scope just let me see where I was hitting".

I did feel good after we finished.  My older Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle that I just recovered after being stolen for 12 years, shot a four inch group at 200 yards, six inches at 300, and was hitting the paper at 400 yards.  Granted they were scattered all over, but at least all shots hit the paper.  My other Mini-14 won't even hit the paper at 200 yards, neither will Russ's.  Both are newer guns.

Good deal. I love making a BIG MOUTH eat his words! Next time ask them if they want to shoot gun for gun.
Like the late WALTER BRENON used to say on the old TV series THE GUNS OF WILL SONNET (NO BRAG, JUST FACT)

They say CROW tastes just like chicken! HA HA!!!

I went to the range Saturday morning with a couple of friends.  One guy has all the coolest toys and he brought one of his AR-15's in .223.  I bet he has close to $2000 in that rifle - maybe $3000.  He has a Leupold Mark IV 20X target scope on it that retails for around $1500.  Anyway, he was shooting groups around 1.5 to 2" at 100 yards.  I was working on load development for my .223 Handi and had two loads that shot 1.25" groups (5 shots) and one that would have been under 1" group except for one flyer.  Not bad for a $220 rifle and a hand-me-down scope!

Poor fella.  He just loves his fancy rifle and I think he felt a little disappointed in it.  I didn't mean to make him feel bad.  Oh well.  It's not my fault - the Handi-Rifle's to blame.

Congrats! Nothing more satisfying than making someone get quiet. Knowing that when they get home their gonna be sitting there talking to themselves over what happened. LOL

I hafta ask too. Got your mini-14 back after being stolen 12 years ago? Wow, that is something. Bet that was a shock when you got that call and got it back in your hands after all that time.

Sourdough, you are a lucky man to have recovered your Mini after a dozen years! Better still, those other guys with the fancy guns got their comeuppance!!

One of my gun club acquaintances is going bear hunting next month in Siberia(!!!) He just had to lay out a fortune for a new Browning in one of those exotic short-fat magnums (he doesn't handload -- maybe $3 per shot?) For some reason, that whole arrangement doesn't appeal to me. He'd have spent his money more wisely taking a reliable old US-made rifle up to your neck of the woods and paying an American guide to hunt brown bear. Yup, I'm a chauvinist -- drive a Ford, shoot an NEF, hunt plain old whitetails in Wisconsin.

Your story made my day -- thanks!!

Dependent on the weather, we are either leaving Thursday of this week, or Monday of next week, for a trip into the Alaska Range for Grizzly.  I will be taking my 30-06 Handi, and using Nosler 180 gr Partitions.  Hopefully we will be able to catch some bears coming out of their dens.

Maybe we'll get some shots at wolves also.  No three Ss here.  When we shoot one or two we are proud of it and tell the world.

My Mini-14 was stolen 12 years ago here in Alaska.  It was located when ATF did an audit on a gun shop in North Carolina.  It had been sold three times by that gun shop, and had come back to them a fourth time.  The person who had sold it to the gun shop the first time was already serving time on a weapons misconduct charge.  I'm lucky I just got it back.

Very lucky, thats an amazing story. From Alaska to end up all the way in NC. Glad to hear you got it back...after all that time you probably didn't think much on it anymore but thats a great thing. Serial coulda been filed off or a million other things that would have made the story end different. Pretty cool.

Sourdough ... El Cheapo SHINES Again!  Nice story.
A couple of the fellas at our range are still talking about the 5 shot 7 x 2 3/4 group at 600yds of mine.  Three holes could be covered by a silver dollar.  Buffalo Classic: lead and the original powder - Black  ;D

FWIW - will be up Fairbanks way the 19-21st June.  Doing Alaska with the Mrs - Fairbanks down to Vancouver.
Regards

I love stories like this and I could relate similar ones but will only tell of one that I witnessed.  It occurred years ago in New York at the Westchester public Shooting Range.  There were a lot of hunters there getting ready for deer season and there were a lot of fancy rifles present.  This old guy showed up with one of the first H&R handy rifles I ever saw.  It was a 30-30 with iron sights.  Well after a target change a lot of guys were sitting around congratulating themselfs for hitting the target waiting for the next relay to start.  The old guy was the subject of a lot of comment.  The next relay started and he fires 3 shots off hand and sits down waiting to see his target.  Come the target change he brings it back and I and several others looked at it and he had all three rounds in the midle of the X ring in a 1.5 inch group.  Needless to say no one bad mouthed either his gun or shoot after that.
