H4198 Hard to ignite?
« on: April 27, 2008, 02:52:18 PM »
I loaded some trapdoor starting loads for my Handi today. 43 grains of H4198 under a 300 grain bullet with WLR primers. I had 5 out of 6 hangfire. Is h4198 hard to ignite?  The case is not quite full. I would imagine that with a compressed load this would not be a problem.

You would need to see if the primer went off or not.  If it went off and did not light off the powder I would be very afraid of that load.  Larry

Well the primer went off each time, was just a hangfire. Just a snap pause boom.

I would say you are within inches of detonation which could be a very bad thing.  If detonation would occur then it could be quite distructive.  Happens with much reduced loads mostly, some say it is a mith, others have blown up rifles to prove it's existance.  Larry

Hodgdon shows the start load for H4198 and 300gr Sierra as 45gr in their trapdoor data, they use CCI 200 primers. I've shot levergun loads using H4198 and they shot real good, one hole 100yd 3-shot accuracy with Nosler partitions.

Was this powder from a new can or is it by chance an older can that may have drawn moister or just be to old?
Possible weak primers?
It's hard to say but would scare the heck out of me.
I hope you find the cause and be careful.

Had the same thing happen years ago and it is rather unnerving in any weapon.

Get some polyfill and put it in the shell between the bullet and powder o take up the space....... or change powders.

I got the data from LEE modern reloading 2. I gives 42.7 as a start and 45 as max. My hornady suppliment gives 55 grains max with 28000 cup as a max for a trapdoor. I find that pressure level to be a bit high and it is listed as a lever gun load in the Lee manual. The powder was from a can I just purchased from calelas. The primers seem to work in everything else I have tried them in. I am going to try a different powder in this loading, using trailboss for my redcued loads and I'll save the H4198 for some of the more stout loads, where the case is fuller.

Hodgdon uses the same trapdoor MAP as SAAMI, 28k. ;)

THanks for the link Tim. I also did reprime the empty cases when I got home and tried them. All fired and seemed to be very equal in blast. visible sparks came from the end of the barrel on each primer. So i do not suspect primer or primer hit to be suspect.
