357 ideas?

I have an extra 357 barrel (because I have a max now) and i am thinking maybe rechambering to 357 Herrett or 35 Remington.  I am even considering cutting the barrel down to 16.5" and putting youth socks on it for a compact 4 wheeler gun.   Any ideas guys?  Right now it has a 2x pistol scope mounted scout style now so losing the front sight is not an issue.

I cut down my max to 17 inches Put a williams peep & youth straight cmbed stock. I love it. Now a 35 rem would be nice. But I think the max gets pretty close

The 357/44 Bain&Davis looks like it would be a great number to rechamber the 357 Handi in.  Not sure what it would have to offer over the 357 Max however.  Unless you had a Blackhawk rechambered in 357/44 B&D to make a combo!

I think the 35 Rem. and the 357 Herret will be about the same energy wise,but for the accurcy,I'd go with the Herret. My contender in 357 Herret will do 2350 fps with a 158 gr. bullet and the 14" barrel and will do 3/4" at 100 yds. when I do my part. The bad part is that there's no factory ammo,but I'm seeing Herret brass showing up by Starline now. Its not that hard to make the brass,and you can find 30 30 brass every range you go to.  Hope this helps    Digger

I have thought about a 357 Herrett off and on for a lot of years. As far as I know it strictly a hand loaders round and making cases would be a pain. Cases could be made out of 30-30 or 375 Winchester. The 375 Winchester is a higher pressure round than the 30-30. Not impossible to make, but a pain. That is what has stopped me. Do a 35 Remington, easy to get brass, easy to hand load or to buy factory ammo for.

Ditchdigger - I just looked on Starline's web site. I did not see 357 Herrett listed?

Midway shows factory brass for the Herrett but does not say who's , also its not cheap .  :o $ 1.85 each

Thank you Stimpy. I forgot about the Quality Cartridge Brass company. Now wait a minute, I remember why I forgot...EXPENSIVE :o :o and the reviews were not good for that company's cases overall. I think I decided I would be better off making cases. A real pain, but doable for a lot less than a buck eighty five. They do make some off beat cases, but pricey. Here are some more...

I think if I had a 2nd 357 barrel. Id max it . then put a scope on it . One with peep & one with a scope.

I did it different, started with a Max, one of the first chamberings I had in a Handi, made a 35 Rem out of it, then got a 357mag barrel fitted to another frame. ;D

On top of that, the 35 Rem barrel was an ejector, I converted it to a factory style extractor. :o :D ;D

I have a 16" barrel TC in 35 Remington and love it.  Would love it more if the barrel were a couple inches longer I think.  The rifle has the short "youth" stock and peep rear sight.  I can duplicate all 38 pistol loads and still am able to exploit the extra power of the rifle cartridge.  The round is very accurate, way more so than my old eyes, but the recoil does get up there a bit.  Not as bad as the 16" 45-70 but quite significant.

This rifle is one of those that is really easy to take along on a quad when were working fences or other duties away from the roads.  Light weight and small it's still powerful enough to knock down anything that may roam into camp at night.

I've had a 357 barrel for the TC but really prefer the 35 Remington because of it's versatility.

I would stick with the 357 mag or max, but if you HAVE to change it, go with the Herret.  Brass is EASY to make.  You just need a few simple tools that no one thinks about.  A buddy of mine picked up a tubing cutter.  It worked ok to wack off the necks.  I picked up a little chop saw from Harbor Freight tools for $20.  That little saw has cut necks off thousand of brass and still runs strong.  Size the 30-30 brass, chop the neck off with chop saw.  Trim the brass to length, deburr, load and shoot.  Trim and debur again after 2 shots thru.  Cake walk......
