I know you can get a bad one in every brand so here is my experience with the Win. Ranger in 30/06 caliber.
I bought a Winchester Ranger from Wally World and mounted a scope and took off to the local shooting gully. I put a few rounds in the mag and one in the chamber and engaged the safety. I decided to put it on the truck hood and throw a few cans out to shoot. As I picked the gun up and started to bring it up to my shoulder I disengaged the safety BANG, it just went off. I thought you idiot keep that *%$*(&& finger away from the trigger, well I worked the bolt, engaged the safety, pointed it in a safe direction and disengaged the safety BANG!! Come to find out it would do it every time, even with the butt (of the gun) on the ground, muzzle pointed at a tall dirt back stop and finger nowhere near the trigger.
I called Winchester and they said send to their repair center in Alabama and they would be glad to fix it. I boxed it up with a letter clearly explaining the problem. About 3 weeks later I got it back with a letter stating that I shouldn't have any more problems with my front sight coming loose, well that was great but as I had removed the front sight and installed screws to cover the holes but I took it to the same shooting area and tried it out, BANG it still did it. I looked at the Tech's name on the repair order and called him at the repair center and asked him if he remembered my gun he said yes and he loctited the screws on the front sight and they would not be coming loose any more. I told him what my letter said and what the problem was, I could almost hear him get ghostly white and say do not shoot it, do not even put ammo in the mag, box it up and I'll have the Big Brown truck pick it up. They did, they got it right the second time, I soon sold that rifle but told the new owner the whole story and gave him the paper work showing all that was done to it. I'm sure it was fine but it would always be in the back of my mind what happened. Would I buy another Winchester, sure.
