« on: July 17, 2003, 01:22:15 AM »
HELLO ALL :D I am goinna put a scope on a 7mm mag and in leaning to the nikon UCC in 6.5-20X44.If i gotta shoot long range with the bipods then i want it to be a good scope but i have also considered the leupold var X3 in 6.5-20 X 40.the leupold is about 150 more.my ? is...is it worth the extra ...is the quality that much better or would the nikon be all that I need...what are your guys feelings as to the pros/cons of these two choices or if anyone would recomend anything better(especially if it cheaper)then it would be appreciated.I look forward to hearing all of your responses                  thnaks,ENCOREROOKIE

Encoreookie,

I won't tell another man what gun or scope to buy. Between the two scopes that you have brought up I would choose the Leupold V-111-6.6-20-50. But that is just me, so have fun choosing and buy the scope that you like and can afford. I have a Leupold V-111-3.5-10-50 on my 7mm mag. and I like it alot. Happy choosing. Carl L.

I would recommend the Nikon.  The Nikon Monarch has excellent clarity and brightness.  The Vari-X III's are good scopes too, but I can not see spending the extra money on the Leupold just for the name, plus I believe the Nikon is even a little bit better than the Leupold.  Just my 2 cents.  Like Carl said, buy something that you like and can afford.

I own SEVERAL Nikon Monarchs and Leupold Vari-X IIIs.  Both are good scopes, but the Monarchs have better glass than the Vari-X IIIs.  Specifically, the resolution and clarity are indeed noticeable, especially in the field.

The only thing that would lean me toward recommending the Leupold in this particular instance over the Monarch is that the Monarch 6.5x-20x has very little eye relief compared to the Leupold in the same magnification range.  Keeping in mind that you will be shooting a 7mm Rem. Mag., you might be better off with the Leupold.  In this case, you would be spending the extra money to keep from getting a black-eye with the scope.

On the other hand, if you are willing to go down a bit in the power range, you can get a Monarch 3.5x-10x-50mm that has about 3.8" of eye relief.

Then again, if you really want higher magnification, like 4x-16x-50mm, then take a look at the Elite 4200.  It has 3.6" of eye relief.  I bought one from Jon at the opticzone and put it on my 7mm ULTRA MAG and I just LOVE that scope.  Plus, I didn't get hit by the scope (then again, I did install a Sims Recoil Pad which helps reduce the kick).
