savage 11F disaster

did some shooting this weekend with some federal 100 gr soft point factory loads. thought all was going well until one didnt sound right upon fiiring. bolt lift was stiff, and upon pulling the bolt back the extractor popped out. looked at the gun and saw a primer sitting on the magazine follower. case was stuck in the chamber. removed the bolt and saw the bolt face was blackened and the ejector plunger was driven back into the bolt head about 1/4 inch. i looked at the other cases i had fired and saw 3 more with blackened case heads. upon tapping the cases on the bench those primers fell out as well. THESE LOADS WERE WAY OVERPRESSURED!!! so thanks to federal ammunition my wifes rifle is now out of commission for the time being. ill drop it off at the gunsmith this week for an inspection and then possibly send it to savage for repairs if needed. federal will be getting a nasty phone call tomorrow morning. worst part is, not one week ago my 10 year old godson fired a few rounds from this box of ammo. thank god no one got hurt in all this mess. I WILL NEVER BUY ANY FEDERAL AMMUNITION AGAIN!!!!!!!!

Funny thing is that the primer doesn't look all that flat.  The ejector hole looks like it is flaired out, kind of like a little cone around the plunger.  This is a picture of a .243 bolt head I have, note how sharp the edge of the ejector hole is compared to yours.  I wonder if they left the bolt head in the polishing tumbler a little too long with yours and made the face concaved?  You may want to hold off n the nastygram until you talk to the gunsmith.  Larry

Can you give more information on the ammo! Caliber? Lot#? Type of federal Ammo? So we can check are stash! I don't want to flinch everytime I use federal! Thanks Dale

My bet is that the bolt face is concaved, when the round fires, it forms to the bolt face, when it bows out it makes the primer pocket hole larger and the primer falls out.  You didn't say how many rounds out of this rilfe etc.  Larry

it was federal blue box power shok 100 grain pointed soft point. i dont have the lot number because unfortunately to absolutely prevent further accidents with this ammo i immediately destroyed it and the box, sorry. i have close to 100 rounds through this rifle all with the same ammo. this is the first time i have had any problems with it. with this ammo it was a real shooter, no 5 shot group ever went over 3/4 of an inch. i havent shot many factory loads over the last few years since i started handloading but i bought this rifle right before deer season last fall and didnt have the time to develop any handloads for it. either way the gun is going to the gunsmith tomorrow for inspection and possibly sent back to savage for another inspection and repairs. ill keep you posted when i find out if the bolt face is concave.

the concave look was due to the bolt face being scorches by the blown primers. i just cleaned the face and measured it and it is even depth the entire way across. i will have it double checked anyway.

I had the same thing happen shooting some Weatherby 338-06 ammo. I just replaced the bolt head, after complaining to Weatherby and being told "we don't care".

you should have never trashed the ammo and box.
1) now if the gunsmith comes back and sayes it is damaged because of the ammo you have no proof you used the federal.

2) You said you where going to start to reload for for this caliber you could have pulled the bullets, and salvaged the bullets and brass

i still have one round of the stuff and  the blown cases. as for the rifle it is at savage right now for repairs. as soon as i get it back i will give you all a full report.

unfortunately that wound be good enough you need the lot number and bar code as well so the can track  it.

If Federal had loaded up a bad batch of ammo I think it would have been more than one box and that we would have heard about it from more than this one thread.  I would think there are other factors in play here, just don't know exactly what they are.  Rifle history may be a factor, but I am curious.  Larry

they may have had issues from other shooters, but with out the paperwork how can they tell if you acutely bought a "Bad lot"  and not some hand loader that hot roded his loads and now trying to piggyback on a issue?

got the rifle back today. savage replaced the ejector, extractor, firing pin and all springs. bolt head is within specs, and rifle was test fired successfully. had it rechecked by my gunsmith and he agrees with savages conclusions. ammo is the most likely culprit. again, sorry for not having the lot numbers. gonna shoot the rifle this weekend with some remington factory loads and see how it performs.
