having worked for a wholesale tool company I know the fat discounts that Midway is getting on their shipping.  Anyone with decent shipping volume can get steep, steep discounts on UPS charges.  What would cost me, personally, $12 to ship from the hub, would cost only $4-5 at the tool company.  Midway and others all inflate their shipping fees to mirror the UPS "retail" price.  It is just gravy on the side to them.

I have been there also and agree with you.
I seem to remember the decline of Midway when they purchased Fajen and ruined them

No NOT ALL do. Midsouth charges ONLY the actual shipping charges they incur in shipping your package to  you no extra. There might be others who do the same but that's the way they do it. It's just one more reason I've been giving them my business for perhaps 25 years or so and recommending them to others since long before they became a sponsor of the site.

Let me ask a couple of questions here...

If you were UPS and your buisiness and your drivers pay came from moving packages...WHO would you give a discount to...the one that moves thousands of packages a day through your doors or the phool who ships some chump change package once a year....????????????????????????????????????

If you wanted to receive your product.... what SIZE package would YOU WANT...something the size of a gum pack or something that was less likely to get "LOST" down someones pants pocket or what......??????????????????????????????????

I'm not certain but I would suspect there is a minimum size package regulated for just this purpose and also for safety in handling and I for one want a package large enough to ensure my receiving it.

Of course some of the shipping is ''inflated"...where do you think the money comes from to pay for the people packaging the products....HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.....it is the cost of doing business....if you were buying these products at your local store you would be paying for the markup also.................HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM....plus some....

Sometimes I can't hardly believe the arguments presented as "reasonable"....doesn't matter the subject....in this case I think a class on business economics and practices is in order.

Competition keeps the costs as low as possible...those costs include shipping in, shipping out, processing, wages, inflation, flooring plus others AND a modicum of profit.  I wonder where you whiners would get you goodies if there wasn't any internet and we would have to go back to the "Sporting goods store"....talk about jacking the price...I've been associated with sporting goods stores and I guarantee buying online is MUCH cheaper than some of the rip-off stores I've been associated with...and that includes what some call "inflated shipping charges"....gimmeabreak....I think some would whine if they got hung with a new rope.

The cost of fuel is the real culprit for inflating shipping costs!

Tim

When fuel costs increase one penny, our costs increase over $8 million annually.

Everything is related to the cost of fuel....Hence, the reason why our economy is in a recession...No one has extra money to buy things with because they are spending it all on fuel.....

Like some have said, I gave up on midway about 10 years ago. There shipping stinks, too many out of stocks, and too many other places that really want my business. Midsouth,Wideners,Natchez,Powder Valley, & Lock stock & barrel get my $$$
Also a new one I tried last fall reedssports.com, very happy with the service from them

Don't know about the others but UPS is adding a fuel surcharge to EVERY package shipped these days and that surcharge is linked to the cost of diesel fuel. They have a chart on their site to show the % the surcharge amounts to based on the price of diesel fuel.

I suspect the other major shippers are doing something similar.

See, there you go...DW06...if you're talking about Reed Sports is Kalifornia you're paying ripoff tax on top of all the rest of the freight and 10 years is a very long time in this day and age...10 minutes is a lifetime sometimes...but it's your money and you can spend it anywhere you want, I wouldn't want to dissuade you.  I have family in that state and lived there the first 30 years of my life when it was a good place to live, but I couldn't wait to get out when the stink started...now I only go there once a year to visit and not even then if I can get out of it.  My son is wondering if he will  have a job tomorrow because the movie star Governor keeps cutting jobs and backing the gun-grabbing "got their money from illicit bootlegging, lying and insider trading "Kennedy's and he has plenty of money to spend to steal your rights, guns and living.

Sorry for the tirade off the point....Rant over.

I actually asked Midway to sponsor the site before I asked Mid-south. I'll not say just what I was told by them but needless to say it was rather insulting and I've never done any business with them since.

I have had a couple "issues" with Midway and Knives. I use MID-SOUTH almost exclusively. EXCELLENT service!!

BTW, Hi guys,  I missed ya!!!

It is wrong to say "all inflate their shipping fees".  I spoke out of turn, my mistake.

That being said, I will have to respectfully disagree about Midsouth only charging "actual shipping charges they incur".  If those are their actual charges from UPS then they need someone to negotiate with UPS.  My old boss played hardball with them, but a small business man has too.  We actually stopped using them and shipped Fedex only for a week.

Leupold VX-II 1-4 scope $279 plus $11.74 as UPS estimate from Midsouth
Leupold VX-II 1-4 scope $250.24 plus $11.91 UPS from Midwayusa.

The Rant still stands....

Must be there are more than one Reed Sports or a Reed Sports and a Reed's Sports...or a Reed Sport and a Reed's Sports Shop.

This one is in San Jose CA and Santa Clara Ca....

http://www.reedssportshop.com/

The guys out in MN would be OK if I wasn't in Oregon...I KNOW I would pay more shipping coming from there.

As I said...the only way to get a deal is to check them ALL out then lay down your bread or pick your poison...Hey...I don't care if my ex-brother-in-law is making the deal as long as it's cheaper than the rest and is the exact same item, not used and abused or a second...knowing him... etc....  :D

That being said, yes, I am just carping, griping, whatever.  I just think that small order fees and handling fees are outdated ways of doing business.  The same can be said for how new cars are ordered and bought.  In the 21rst century why can't I order a car on the internet from GM or Ford?  Because there is a dinosaur system of car dealerships that get fat middle man subsidies.  What a crock.

Don't know if you have been to post office, Fed Ex or UPS lately but there ain't no deals left - a bit better prices with volume but not that much unless you are willing to compromise on your shipping speed as Wideners does. There are only 2 company's that I can count on to get my order to me pronto - as in 3 days from placing the order - Midway and BlackHills. When you order enough items the cost per item is reasonable. You should buy local if you want to avoid the fees.

I order from both MidSouth and Midway USA.  Midway has the fastest shipping. I live in Oklahoma and can get things before I read my email to tell me when I will get my shipment. I usually open two windows to compare prices and see what is in stock on both sites. They are both in the same ballpark as far as prices go but Midsouth is usually cheaper for shipping. Midway has a much larger inventory. What I don't like about Midway is that if you put in an order and forget something it is hard to cancel and reorder because the invoice has already been processed.

I sure order alot of merchandise from Midway on Wednesday night though. Mr. Potterfield has a better marketing department.

Pharmboy

P.S. Mr. Graybeard, I will take into consideration your dealings with Midway USA. I think this is one of the best sites on the internet.

The nice thing about Midsouth for me is that quit often I drive right by it. No shipping. The down side is I have to pay state taxes when I do buy there.

I too have had problems with back orders in the past from Midway but my current problem is with their **** website and all the errors I keep getting. It happens with the work and home puter system which makes me think it's not just me. Anyone else?
