Baiting Coyotes
« on: April 19, 2008, 04:11:35 PM »
I went to the DNR website looking for an answer to this question but came up empty.  Can you legally use bait when hunting coyotes?

Nothing like a nice dead cow to bring them in.  Kind of expensive though. ;)  Don't live in Illinois anymore so don't know if it is legal or not.  The way things  have been going in Illinois lately, you had probably better check with your local game warden.

I was thinking more along the lines of a live or dead chicken.  Or some store bought meat products like liver, chicken gizzards,  etc.....

The game warden told me he throws butchered deer carcasses out in the field from his house and shoots coyotes off of them.  I can't see anything in the regulations that says it isn't legal.

I can't find any info on it either.

Local renters always leave cat behind when they move and I like to feed the wild birds in the winter so, I set a 220 Connibear in a bucket set under my front porch and have plenty of coyote bait? Legal or not, coyotes must eat also?

I don't think your bait can be alive. But I have seen several yippity squeaky lap dogs I'd like to tie out in a field to a chain. ;D Kurt

Baiting for coyotes is legal in IL.  Just can not hunt them after sunset, except when the Fox season is in.  During Fox season they can be hunted 24hrs a day with some exceptions during firearm deer season.  Only night hunting during Fox season, prevents fox from being killed inadvertently.

We used to use a live chicken with a wire attached to one of his legs and an old telephone crank at the other end? Worked for foxes.
