Maxi-Balls out of a Huntsman?
« on: April 18, 2008, 12:50:00 PM »
I have a stainless 24" Huntsman barrel coming for my SB2 rifle. I already have a mould for Thompson Center 370 grain MaxiBalls. Has anyone here shot these out of the Huntsman and how did they perform? What kind of powder charges have worked well?
Thanks

The old Huntsman were designed to shoot the maxi ball although better accuracy has been found with plain patch and ball. The newer ones with the faster twist do shoot some full bore bullets well but ya just about have to figure out which ones your self. I've had some shoot well with 70gr of FFFG. Kurt

My Huntsman is one of the fast twist, 24 in barrel versions. I have tried many combinations including maxi balls. The maxi balls in the 300 to 450gr range did well at 50 and 100 yds with 100 yd groups from 2 to 4 inches using 85 to 90 gr of Pyrodex. With T7 80 gr I get similar results. My Huntsman give the best groups with a sabot 45, 450 gr. (2in)

My huntsman is a 24 inch fast twist and I shoot T/C 470 gr. Maxis in front of two 50 gr. Triple Seven pellets.  Four boxes of the Maxis came with a used ML, so I tried them an they work great.  I shot a nice buck in December coming at me at 60 yards.  I shot him in the chest and the bullet exited the right hip.  It simply bowled him over backward dead.  They group well at 100 yards, and the last time I had it out, I was ringing the 300 yard gong.  The drop seems to be about 30 inches.
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.

I'm just new to the Muzzleloader scene, but I  thought the 50 cal maxi's only came in 320 and 370 grain. I did not realize that they came as heavy as 470 grain. The mold I have appears to be a 370 grain mold which came with my TC White mountain Carbine when I bought it. 90 grains FFG behind the maxi's in the TC make for a very accurate combo , at least in my particular one.
If I can get reasonable groupings with my own poured bullets it would be a lot cheaper.

They are T/C Maxi-hunter No. 7685 I'm pretty sure.  The number is torn where the box opens; could be 7885 or 7865. I'll see if I've got one I can read later and post it.
