40 year old Camillus

This date 40 years ago my guts were tied in knots as I found myself standing on the sands of DaNang Harbor Viet Nam.  I took this Camillus along with me, and we made it back home together.


Bought this just before I shipped out for $5.00.


Here we are together on the streets of DaNang.

It'll be forty years for me Oct 5.  Heh, we were issued those "pilot survival knives"  when I flew as a Navy Aircrewman and none of us could ever get a decent edge on one; obviously you did...

Yup, this knife holds a very keen edge alright.   I kid you not, with a little Adrenalin flowing through your veins its like cutting through butter.   A man could hurt himself with it real quick.     Wouldn't think the ones you guys had should be any different. 

    Aha!  Here's an after thought.      I had forgotten that I bought an Arkansas Stone to go with my knife because the little stone that came in the sheath was too rough, and like you said it wouldn't produce a decent edge.

I was never at war, but I found this Camillus at my parents farm 40 some years ago, handle was rotted  off so i wrappped it in new leather. Thanks for your pic ,was not sure what the original handle was like.

Got issued one 42 years ago the 1st part of March.  It burned up in my aircraft March 30th.  We were back in the same area some months later and a trooper took one off the body of a PAVN solder.  the leather handle had been burned off and was rewrapped with EE8 commo wire.  Coincidence?  I think not!

I was issued one as a member of the Military Police  Special Reaction Team at Ft.Carson back in 1986. It was a great knife for abusing. It was a freebie from Uncle Sam and I didn't think much of it at the time but now it's a family heirloom (at least in my opinion).

   Same feelings here.   Years ago, I bought my son a nice hunting knife, he really didn't show much interest in it.   When he moved from home, he didn't even take it with him.   The other day he came by and had one of these Camillus' in new condition with scabbard too.  He was all excited about it.    I never knew he thought so much of my knife.

  Thanks  for the compliment  Irish gunman .   Back in those days when I was coming back home through the states, I never even got a nod.     Probably because of all the war protesting that was going on.
