3 handguns and 3 long guns what is your pick?
« on: April 14, 2008, 05:27:10 PM »
Hypothetical question:  If you have to cut down (or increase for some) your gun inventory to just 3 handguns and 3 long guns.  What will you keep and what caliber/actions/manufacturer you would choose?

My pick is this:

Handgun 1:  44 Mag S&W629, 4"bbl
Handgun 2:  .22RF Ruger MKII or MKIII 678 Stainless steel
Handgun 3:  CZ75BD 9mm pistol

Long Gun 1:  Benelli Montefeltro 20GA
Long Gun 2:  Model 7 SS, 7mm-08 Rem
Long Gun 3:  Ruger 77/22 rimfire

What would be yours?

single six .22
snubby .357
.454 casull

12 gauge
-06
.458 lott

That would cover about all bases as I see it.

hmmmmm... another of the "if you could only have..." questions.  That's cool, they're fun to think about.  Now is that 3 of each at any one time or only three of each and you could never change?

I guess if I couldn't change (ever) and could only have three long guns and three handguns... do TC's count as one or would I get one frame and multiple barrels?

Oh well...

Long guns

Remington 870 12 gauge (dang... fire alarm is going off gotta go) guess that means it's lunch time

let's try this again...

Long guns

Remington 870 12 gauge - can hunt just about anything with it, reliable, always functions, replacement parts are cheap and available.  I don't even like pumps but you just can't argue with their track record

Remington 700 .30-06 - can hunt just about anything with it, reliable, functions as long as you do your part, replacement parts are cheap and available

Quality .22 LR (pick a brand you like) bolt action - good for small game, lasts forever, would probably pick a Remmy again since I have one that's over 60 years old and still shoots 1.5 inches at 50 yards.

Short arms
Ruger Blackhawk in .357 Mag. - about as reliable as an anvil, easy to find ammo in .38 or .357, accurate, can hunt up to deer/hog sized game, doubles as defensive weapon if needed

Ruger Single Six Convertible - still like an anvil, easy ammo availability, can use .22 LR or .22 WMR, small game hunting, not insignificant firepower when loaded with .22 WMR ( I wouldn't want anyone shoot at me for fun with one that's for sure)

The next one is sort of a hard for me...
1911 style .45 ACP - I don't like the springs, mags, or "breakability" of a semi-auto if I could NEVER change it.  That's why I went with revolvers earlier.  Would really like to have a semi-auto for defense though.

Might swap this choice for a .45 ACP revolver that could use moon clips or feed without.  I'm thinking the revolver would win my choice.

All that being said, I tried to pick repeaters that were very common, that are hard to break, accurate and affordable.  I tried to pick chamberings that would give the most bang for the buck so to speak.

Thank God we aren't forced into that choice though.  I really enjoy having 8-10 long rifles to choose from for hunting and 5 different shotguns for different uses.  Those Contender's sure come in handy too.  I really wish I had more pistols and revolvers.  I only have two now.  Guess I'll have to get busy solving that dilema!!!

I would say I won't give up any I have without a fight.

   Long guns

   1 .22 CZ 452

2  .22 Hornet or .223 single shot or bolt action ( bigest thing I  would shoot around here is a whitetail -- yes I can do head shots out to 100 yards with the .223 -- 50 yards with the Hornet but don't ask)

   3  870

  Hand guns

   1 Blackhawk .357

2 a good .22 auto  ( I have more than one--don't ask me to go to only one )

3 a good 9mm auto ( I am undecided on this as to which one I will be getting)

2. 1911 / 45 colt with many clips great for carry and defense easy to find ammo and components...
3. 44 magnum ruger custom single action with long cylinders or FA ( available ammo, accurate and potent, easy to find an accurate load for anything needing shooting.)

1. encore rifle frame with 308 barrel ( and several others - still one rifle...: 223, 22, 22mag, 460SW<also shoots 454,45colt,>
2. superposed over under or side by side 3 1/2" 12 gauge with overbored barrels and interchangeable chokes from turkey xtra full thru cylinder bore and all between; inerchageable barrel sets in 20 magnum and 10 guage and 30 -06 barrels for it as well.
3. dpms or colt AR 308 semi with removable scope rings, adjust. obj. 4-14 power IOR scope, picatinny rails on top and sides and bottom of free floated fore end, pressure activated laser and light to mount on picattinny rails, barrel threaded for silencer, silencer, bolt lock, adjustable gas valve for adjustable reliability, adjustable stock, and bayonet lugs with bayonet that can  be attached, various sized clips for different uses..

Hand guns:

1.  .22 ruger semi auto or 357/38spl not sure, but rimfire ammo is cheaper.
2.  .45 auto 1911
3.  460 S&W will shoot all kinds of .45 ammo

Long gun:

1.  .30-06 bolt gun will work for varmint to big game with the right ammo
2.  .45-70 because I will always have one.  It will handle any size game
3.  12 ga will take birds and just about any small game as good as any .22

It would be real hard to live with only three of each but these would cover just about everything I would shoot at.

SingleShotShorty:

Not fare.  You choose 6 long guns instead of 3!  ;D

The idea is to see (like a spring cleaning) which guns will have more utility than sentimental value when you have to make a hard choice.  My choice was made based on the guns they get more action than any other gun I have and that will definitely include a pistol and a rifle in a 22LR for economic reasons.  For big game I want a high power rifle and a center fire revolver (44 mag).  For small game and lots of plinking, the 22LR rifle and handgun.  For self defense, the 9mmP, CZ75BD, and for a do all type of gun, the shotgun.  All of my choices can be used interchangeable for hunting and self defense.

I do like the response of the one that all three handguns were S&W10 in 38 special.  In case that one worns out (I suppose) you have two more to go and only one type of round to reload.

The handgun part is easy.

4" S&W 45 ACP

4" S&W 45 Long Colt

8" clone 1860 revolver

Long guns make it a bit harder.

Ruger M77/22

Rolling Block 50-70

Some kind of 45-70

I would liked to have included my Winchester 1895 in 405 WCF but so far I have not been able to work up a black powder load for it.

It was also hard to leave out the Swedish Mauser and the Winchester M12 but I would put those on the Mrs's list.
