Cheese,
I think I tried to answer this in another thread, and didn't read it right anyway.  My stab at the answer is that There are some very good counties in the far south - like Pope, and others in the Shawnee Natl Forest.  Central Illionois has some exceptional counties from Indiana to the Mississippi River - particularly around Peoria to Pike County.  Northwestern Illinois - Joe Davies, Carroll counties are very good.  Finding a place is tough unless you have deep pockets..

Cement Man, in my opinion, your exactly right! Hunting deer in Illinois is very good, if you know someone where your hunting or are a land owner and can create your own ecosystem?
Cbeesehead, no rifles are not allowed in Illinois unless they are muzzle loaders.

I thought there were pistol caliber rifles allowed, or maybe I am confused with another state.

Yeah that's the problem with this state, there are a lot of deer and big ones too. It's very difficult to find any on public land though and private land is getting scarce.

I have a couple of friends that were kicked off a private spread in Pike county because the land got leased by an outfitter. We went to the outdoors show in Rosemont and the outfitter had a both there. I had to physically drag my friend out before he tore the place up.

We have a lot of big corn fed deer here in this state. The place where we camp in Nov. has people from Tennessee that come up. They can get just about all the deer they want there but come to Illinois for the bigger deer.

You haven't seen the deer in Jo Davies then. A guy I work with gets some nice bucks out of there, one of them pope&young.
