A Walking around rifle

    I'm thinking I'd like a .223 rifle with iron sights. Kind of a lightweight thing. The synthetic stock would be nice to keep the weight down. I see the only thing there is this set up with the youth style stock. I can either order a full sized stock with the Hornet barrel and buy the .223 barrel or see how the youth stock fits maybe trade it off if I don't like it.


  I know the easy answer.... but 'em all, keep 'em all.

This one comes in at 5.5 pounds, 17 Remington FB.  Larry

Yes it is a youth stock.  I have no problem shooting it at all, in fact it fits fairly well, it is the stock from one of the now defunct combo rifles, 22/410's.  If you were to loose the scope it would be under 5 pounds.  Larry

 Rusty You can get the 223 in the super light weight with ether open sights,
or scope base, ether adult or youth stock. My daug in law got e/sights And I
 got w/ scope base, No open sights Both real accerate out of the box.
 It can get just about any thing if have a good dealer' Best of luck Marv.

Buy the super lite youth and swap stocks.
I have thought about doing it myself.

Of course I would keep the youth stock so my toddler could use my Handis some day.

       I have yet to go see my dealer ( dang it should I be talking like that?) I was just looking at the H&R catalog online. I was thinking a talk with the dealer instead of just walking in and acting like I knew what I was talking about might render different results.

   Do you have any idea what wholesaler they went through to get yours with the adult stock and iron sights?

  Rusty, I don't know what they came out of,  probley same one They were bought at different
 gun stores, Mine was order got in about a week, Her was bought right of the store.

A Superlight with sights and adult stock, unless it's old stock is gonna be hard to find since they don't make it that way any more apparently. The current production Superlight Compact(Youth) is the only configuration in a complete 243 rifle that has sights. The model number for the current and old production adult stocked 243 Superlight is SB2-SL5 which comes with a scope base only now, I looked at the 2006 catalog, it was listed with scope rail only then. Even more frustrating is the 243 Superlight barrel is being discontinued in the accessory barrel program, following suit, it will be discontinued as a complete rifle, unfortunately.

The youth stock is not that difficult to shoot with in particular if you have a vest or jacket on but it is not optimal. I replaced a youth stock on a Hornet with a Choate stock for $35  -  http://www.riflestock.com/catalog_page.cfm?queries_index=index10&ProductCode=33&ProductSubCodeID=198&NewProduct=0  and it made rifle into a nice walk around rifle.

Oops :-[ ::), but same thing applies unfortunately, have to settle for the SB2-SY3 and swap stocks. :-\ The 223 SL barrel isn't on the discontinued list, not yet anyway.

you could pick up a regular handi and get it drilled for a front sight. then buy a williams reciever sight

  Well I ordered it today. a .223 handi with the youth stock and iron sights. I figure I can change the but stock out later if need be.

You could also just add a slip-on recoil pad and it may be just perfect. ;D

   You're right Tim, that might be one way to go. I'll see just how bad it is to shoot while short first. It might not be all that  bad. I have a Steven's Favorite that has a short LOP as does any 10/22.

I got a superlight youth model for the wife and even with a scope sight I don't find it all that awkward for me, I'm 6'3" with a 35" sleeve length, so, unless your last name is "Yao" I doubt you'll have any complaints at all with open sights.

  The sights aren't the problem. If there is a problem at all, which I'm not even sure about as of yet it will be the length of pull. The H&R online catalog lists the LOP for the youth model as     11 3/4". IIRC standard LOP is more like 14".

  The more I think about it the more I'm beginning to think that this might just be the handiest rifle yet.
