Tulsa gun show
« on: April 07, 2008, 04:27:14 AM »
Did any of you guys go to the tulsa gun show this weekend.  I could not get over the amount of people!  I have never saw so many people at a sunday show.  The prices seemed very high.  I could not get over some of the dealers bitching about how slow sales were and have 50-80% condition firearms for a new price.  I do not under stand that?  I did not purchase an item.  It was just about too crowded to enjoy.

I went to the show both days.  Took two to sell on Saturday and sold one. Took one on Sunday and after 3 hours sold it.  It seemed to me to be even busier on Saturday than Sunday.  In talking to some the people at the tables - they felt that they weren't doing as well as they did last fall.  The economy seems to have that affect sometimes.  At the last minute before I was going to leave I looked down between the bottom of an A-Frame gun rack and saw a rifle - picked it up and it was Rem 581 complete with sights and a Bushnell Scopechief IV 3x9 - Scope is in great shape and the 581 needs a stock refinish but the rest is in great shape - got it for $80 and left the show.
The show is so big that it can be overwhelming - but it is fun and you can see all kinds of guns and people.

I like what you say about all kinds of people.  That is a under statement.  The parking situation was the worst part.

I know what you mean on the parking - once the parking behind the building is complete it will be better than it has ever been - but will still not be enough for this show.

There are several reasons I quit going to the Tulsa show.
1. The parking got totally out of control. Try carring a case of ammo from the show to the racetrack where is where you will park unless you get there Friday night and set up camp.
2. Wanenmacher's admission price has gone thorugh the roof plus what he charges for a table is beyond belief.
3. The prices at the show are really high. I can get 99.9% of what I want online delivered to the house for less.

I started going to that show when it was still in what we called the shoe store to the east of the exposition building. and didn't miss one for over 30 years it was a lot of fun and you could find some bargains and at the time it was the only place to buy reloading supplies. But all things come to and end. Was it Wanenmacher's greed driving up dealers cost or the dealers greed who knows. I will admit sometimes I miss going just to be around people who pretty much think the same way that firearms are not evil.

I agreed with the price problem.  Tryed to get a few guys down to what a gun should cost or even a little over on one I really wanted but could not get them to move a whole lot.  On a cz bolt action 17hmr was marked at 519 and ask what the best he could do was he said 525 plus tax.  I slowly rest the gun back on the peg and moved on.  Was looking for a 10/22 as well, when I found one that was priced right I usually found a rusted receiver that someone put a new barrel on and a new stock.  The number of people was crazy as was the parking.  I will probably go back but most likely to just look with those prices.  The OKC gun show seems to be much better on prices and parking and people just less guns.  I did get some reloading supplies, that have been hard to find in my area so was not a total loss

We usually attend both the spring and fall shows, there are 4 of us that on occasion take the Motorhome up and make a weekend of it, I know several of the dealers who make and sell Custom Knives and several of the dealers, lets face it with that many tables and that many people it is going to be hectick no matter what kind of show it is, The people selling Ammo and Reloading componet almost ran out on Saturday, we got 10,000 Primers but had to take a variety to do so, ammo was going out by the cart load I wasnt there Sun. this year but if I had been I would have looked at those tables just to see if they had any back-up stock they could bring in, If you go to the Tulsa show looking for a BARGAIN it just isnt going to happen you will do better at your local gunshow, the only benefit of the Tulsa is you will be able to see some guns that you wont see at your local show.  Until November I will be waiting to go again.   JIM
