Need help with my new 1500 Legacy Varmit .243
« on: April 02, 2008, 04:04:48 PM »
Needless to say I am tickled with my new heavy-barreled .243. It is my first Howa and I look forward to shooting it. One heck of a gun for the price. I want to adjust the trigger pull. Is the adjustment screw facing the muzzle of the gun for pull weight? Is the one facing the butt of the gun for travel/creep? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Assuming we both have the same trigger assemblies, my 22-250 Varminter Supreme is about 4+/- years old, this is direct from the Howa rep when I spoke to him a few years back.  "To remove creep: REAR SCREW----Cock action, put safety on, turn screw clockwise until screw stops.  Check safety for easy on and off.  If OK adjustment is perfect, if not, back off 1/4 turn.

To lighten trigger pull: FRONT SCREW---back out 3/4 turn at a time, dry fire until it's what you want."

Maybe you'll have better luck than me.  Mine was still a bit "creepy and gritty" so I ended up buying a Timney from Midway for about $40-$50 bucks.   Hope you like your Howa as much as I do mine.

Thanks for the help. This is my first Howa rifle. After doing research and hearing what actual owners of these guns were saying about them I decided to buy one. I found one like I wanted and drove 3 1/2 hours west to get it. I knew I was going to buy the gun as soon as I got it in my hands. I am excited about getting a scope on it and pulling the trigger some. Based on the feedback I have seen from owners I would say these guns are the very best value going right now. I will post results (good or bad) as soon as I can. Thanks again for the help. The trigger feels smooth as glass with no creep that I can tell. I'm just used to my other guns triggers which are very light.

Good for you, maybe they've improved them since I bought mine.  A few other guys also posted that theirs were just fine too.  After I owned mine a while, I pillar-bedded my action and free-floated the barrel and it appears that improved my groups even more.  The Howa rep said the Varminters (22-250) had full-floated barrels, but I had a couple contact points that I eliminated.

Mine is the .243 Varmiter and the barrel definitely is not floated(yet). I too had heard mixed opinions of the Howa trigger. I have to say that mine has been a very pleasant surprize. It has adjusted down very well and the creep is gone. I read one fellas desciption of their trigger being cheaply made and subject to "spreading" open. Perhaps they have changed trigger designs. I like it. Now to get some dry weather so I can shoot it some!

No, that was an after market trigger he was talking about. The Howas are pretty solid and can be made to function quite well usually needing nothing more than a good cleaning and lube job. I have the same gun you have (bought last year) and like it a lot. Also have a Vanguard which is much older and I put a Timney on it.

How does yours shoot? What modifications(if any) have you done to yours?

Changed the stock to a B&C Medalist. It likes the lighter bullets, 70-87gr and H4350 which will do .5MOA.
