I had to get that model 10 today!!!!
« on: April 01, 2008, 05:33:23 PM »
Had a very interesting day. Me and the girlfriend went to the gunstore so I could "look". I learned years ago on how you obtain the gun you want while appeasing the lady that you care about......You wait them out..... ;)

I, very intentionally, wandered over to the used gun section of the store and made one very appealing statement. I said, "Look! That is a S&W model 10 with the tapered barrel (10-7) and it is in great condition. Wow, that style of the model 10 is romantic. Remember the movie "The Untouchables" [her favorite movie].

Long story short, she agreed for me to purchase, thanks to actor Andy Garcia. Though I had to recollect on my "fun" time shopping at "Bath and Body Works", and something about us attending a "Listening Skills" class for couples( I don't know I wasn't listening), it was worth it!!!

It was a fun day. And my girlfriend, I love her dearly. She said as we were leaving "Red Lobster", we are here because you wanted that gun, aren't we? I played dumb....

And well, I'm sitting here, at 10:30pm, with my hands just cleaned of lotion[had to give her a foot rub before bed....no kidding!] and passing along this info to my friends.

Anywho,,,,,,,a beautiful Model 10 has a new permanent home. Carry on fellas.................

Hi Mohawk
"WOW" All That Over a Purchase of  a model 10 ? I married one that Loves guns. She surprised me on Easter Sunday with the Combat masterpiece model 15 shown below. We were at a Local gun show seeing some of our Gun-show friends when a Buddy of mine asked my Opinion on this model 15. He was Offered it from a seller for $300.00 and I told him it was a good deal. It had some fine scratches and the show was Very slow because of the holiday so I had Taken it all apart all the way to the Frame and was Polishing it with some Flitz when my wife walked up and asked me who the gun belonged to ? I told her my buddy had Bought it from a seller walking the show for $300.00 and what a good deal he had gotten on it. She went on to ask if it was like the one I used to have but regretted selling a couple of year ago, and I said it was but in better shape. I finished with it & Put it all back together and then placed it in his Glass Pistol display case after he Priced it at $450.00. I then walked the show & saw a few more friends and Later asked the wife, if she was ready to go ? I made my way to the door as she Lagged behind saying goodbye to some of her friends and as we were just about to the car, she Pulled this out of her Purse and Kissed me on the cheek saying "Happy Easter". Evidently she had returned to my Buddies table and Bought this for me as an Easter present. I was very Pleased to have gotten it, But it did not surprise me too much as she has done this many times in our 23 Years of  Marriage, because she supports my Hobbies and shoots as well. Once we were on the road I asked her what she Paid for it and she said just what my Buddy Gave $300.00, and she added "I Know you Regretted selling the one off you had like that a while ago, so I figured you would Like it". I learned early on while Dating if a Woman does not Enjoy or Participate in the hobbies or sports I like, I did not have them around long as Life is Way Too short to be a Slave over it or have to make up excuses over something I enjoy and support. No offense, and I don't mean to sound off Base or Cruel here, but take some Heart felt advice from a Guy that has been Happily Married almost 24 Years now if you Marry this Person , that does not appreciate or support you buying gun's I can Guarantee you it will not get any better as far as Her accepting your Hobby as I have a buddy that thought he could change his Woman's ideas about him Making Purchases she did not agree with such as Guns and sporting goods and their marriage did not last long at all, and in the end his X-Wife Took all his guns away in a Nasty divorce Settlement because she knew how much they Really meant to him.  Now, Let's see some Pictures of that Pencil Barrel Model 10 you spoke of. Regards, Hammerdown

That's a nice model 15, hammerdown! I love the nickle and diamond grips. Must be an early model.

I looked at another model 10 while there and found something interesting. It also had the pencil barrel but it was a 10-9. I once heard that the last phase to have the tapered barrel was the 10-7, and the heavy barrel was added when the 10-8 was introduced. I would appreciate info on this if you guys have it!!!

The 10-7 I bought was primo. Only blueing missing was at the muzzle and it does not appear to have been shot very much at all. The grips were aftermarket but comfy. They are hogue rubber grips, not bad. The timing, endshake, and overall fitness of the revolver was excellent, if not perfect. It almost echoes when you close the cylinder it is so tight.

And my girlfriend. I don't mind that she is not a gun nut. She spend the money for my birthday present on my autistic son and thats when I knew she was a keeper. And as stated by 35Rem, she loves action, westerns, and movies that I like as well. The only negative in that arena is the 4 seasons of "The Golden Girls" she has. I have since moved them to the back of the rack(out of sight, out of mind).

But the one morning I woke up and she was sitting on the porch she had me. I asked why she was up so early. She stated that she liked to sit on the back porch at around 7am, because she enjoyed watching the pair of Whitewing Doves that were building a nest in the oak tree 20 feet from the deck. I would watch these pair of doves with her. One would NEVER leave the nesting area and one would, literally, make trips back and forth between the nesting area and around the woods collecting twigs, leaves, and other material for the nest for hours on end.......A very hard worker these doves were.

Yeah, the listening class was absurd. Thank God we have the technology to put TV on Cell phones!!!! It was a seminar type venue. I can't believe they pay people to lecture on that stuff. We she asked me what I learned I said that Fox news comes in clear as a bell. She laughed and thought I was joking.

And yes, I know Mikey, you have been learnin' me for about 8 years now on GB's and the fares of a beautiful girl still make me forget things.......

Hello
The Tapered barrel ran up to a 10-9 Model. They still offered the Tapered Pencil Barrels up till 10-10 series and it was well into that series being around 1995-96 when they moved on to the Heavy barrel and changed the configuration to a round butt and ceased using the Square butt along with the tapered barrel  that had been on this series since the late 1800's in the Pre-10 series along with the tapered barrel. it would Not surprise me to see a  few in the 10-11 series with a Tapered Barrel and Square butt as S&W did not throw away parts and used up all their supplies before switching over fully to a new design change. The Model 15 above is a dash-4 series. It was the last Series before the Pinning of Barrels ceased. it shipped in 1978 but Came with a set of P.C. Magna style service grips. I Like the larger target style grips so had the hard to find Rosewood Diamond set from the Late 1950's Lying around and figured they would make the Nickel finish Look nicer than a Lighter style wood grip, so that is why it has them on it. I hope this helps, Hammerdown

And our wonderful ladies think we only pay for guns with cash. Usually the price is much higher.

That was a $600+ day in addition to the "Golden Girls" Trauma!!!!  A nickel plated 10 with a tapered barrel would have landed me smack dab into a "Knots Landing" season. I think she'll get used to it. I hit the 9 ring at 35yds on the first shot of this new revolver and she asked ifthe sights were not working because I did not get a "Bullseye".........Geez......This starting over stuff for single parents who are Smith nuts is tough!!!!!

Great success story!

Here's a couple shots of a nice used Model 10, 4" pinned barrel, I picked up this past winter:

Understand actions, for they become habits. Study your habits, for they become character.
Develop your character, for it becomes your destiny.
