AR15 Magazine Reflections-Surplus vs. PMag
« on: March 30, 2008, 12:47:41 PM »
I have purchased the following magazines for my AR15s.
1] 7 30 round military surplus NHMTG magazines with the green follower.
2]2 20 round military surplus Okay Industries magazines with black plastic follower
3] 3 20 round military surplus NHMTG magazines with metal follower.
4] 3 20 round military surplus NHMTG magazines with black plastic follower.
5] 10 30 rounds Magpul PMag non windowed magazines.
All but three of the military surplus magazines with the plastic followers have failed in one rifle or another to hold the bolt open on the last shot. Some have failed in all three AR15 rifles I own (three different manufacturers).
All of the metal follower magazines have, in one rifle or another, and almost 100% of the time, failed to hold the bolt open on the last shot. Additionally, two of them let the last cartridge jump the lips and jam on the last shot in two of three rifles.
The PMags have performed 100% correctly in all three ARs that I own.
I have three military surplus mags that have performed flawlessly in all three of my ARs, and they are marked with a check for correct functioning in each rifle, thus each has 3 checks.
The PMags cost only 2-3 more dollars each than the military surplus. I will be purchasing only PMag in the future. I suspect that the military magazines may be lot reject overruns.
