99E trigger pull
« on: March 29, 2008, 06:57:14 PM »
I have a 99e in 308 that I bought cheap a couple years ago.  My slug gun grouped better.  I liked it though and after playing around with different bullets and c.o.l. it shoots about 1 1/2" 100 yards.  Shot a nice 10 pointer with it this last year.

But  -- the trigger pull is pretty bad.  About right for below zero temps with numb fingers.

What can be done to rework the trigger?

A good gunsmith who knows his business can get that heavy, creepy trigger down to a crisp 3 lbs. with no problem at all.  Mine did...   :)

Ditto what Ron said.  I had my trigger touched up.  As for 1 1/2 groups, that doesn't sound all that good considering mine holds sub MOA.  You might want to check your bore for fouling.  My rifle is good for three to five shots off the bench before the barrel starts to warm up then my groups will open up.  I generally shoot 3 shot groups then put her down to cool.

It is really easy to llighten the trigger on a 99. By removing the buttstock, you have access to the trigger. Stone down the engagement a bit at a time to get what you need. I had an 99E (my first deer rifle) and did the job myself after researching some gunsmithing books. I was surprised at how easy it was.
