Problem with M29
« on: March 29, 2008, 04:33:49 PM »
I have a new to me Model 29 S&W that I recently acquired.  It is a blued, 4" barrel and is way more accurate than I am.  I really like the gun and it is FUN to shoot...as long as you single action it.  If you try to shoot it DA mode, it fires the first shoot and then will go around the next 5 rounds hitting the leading edge rim of the cartridge with the firing pin.  I know that it is not getting the cylinder in time, but my question is why?  Why will it work perfectly in SA mode but not DA mode?  Any suggestions?  Is it something that needs to be cleaned or should I just take it straight on to the 'smith?

Thanks!

give smith an wesson a call. They will send you a free prepaid shipping label and probably fix it for free. It is dangerous like that and should be fired.

What Lloyd said!!!!  DO NOT fire the gun again! Both you and your gun could be severely injured or destroyed!!!

it sounds to me like the hammer 'dog' is possibly broken or worn.   it is the part on the front edge of the hammer that the trigger bears against causing the hammer to move rearward.    the cylinder latch should engage before the hammer dog comes off the trigger and releases the hammer against a properly-indexed (timed) cartridge.    if the hammer dog doesn't keep the hammer moving rearward until the cylinder is latched the hammer will release and catch the leading edge of the cartridge approaching its proper position behind the forcing cone.    this may be the case.   but, i'd expect it to be the problem the first time you tried to fire a round in a string of cartridges using the double-action mode.

because the hammer dog doesn't come into play when we cock the hammer in single-action mode the 'dog' being worn isn't a factor.

take care,
