My H&R 20 ga.ultra slug hunter shoots the Hornady sst's realy well. Bought the gun 3 years ago and have been working on it ever since. Floated the for end, thumb hole stock (had to have it  ;D) bored the back end of the stock in 2 places cut the steel bar in half to put the weight in the thumb hole, spent 2 days on the trigger it's now clean at 2 1/5 lbs.. It or me would shoot good one day and not so good the next. I had done some research about shooting slug guns and was almost convinced that the slug was still in the barrel when the gun started to recoil. A good friend bobed his H&R 12 ga.to 22 in and was shooting better. We had taken 5 diferent slug guns to the range that day. I grabbed a tape measurer and the H&R's were the only guns with 24 in. barrels.
I had it fitted with a youth model barrel and thats when it all came together. I can shoot it like I shoot a rifle, front bag only and don't have to control muzzle jump. Clover leafes at 100 yds. I shot a buck last year at 184 yds, doa. I whish I had the money I spent shooting slugs

I have an Ultra Slugger, Rem 12 bore rifled with cantalever, 1.5 X 5 scope.
NONE of the factory slugs I have gone bankrupt over have given me consistant FIVE shot groups.
I have gotten 2" at 100 wih 3 shots only to have two flyers open the groups to 6 inches or better.
A great deal of the probelms with sabot slugs is in the petals.
If it's real cold outside the petals get cole (hard) and one or two will actually break off before the slug is released giving the dreaded flyer.
Best of the bunh are the non discarding "sabots" like hammerhead and Buckhammer.
The slug and sabot stay one piece all the way to the target and they hit like a train wwreck.
Best performing sabot remains BRI now owned by Winchester. The BRI does not have petals but is a true sabot or shoe in two pcs. that fall away once the paylod clears the barrel.
Too bad Winchester still loads the BRI at a molassas speed of 1275 f.p.s.
I shot a small button buck at 80 yards with BRI slugs and not one passed thru, broke a bone, or knocked the 80 pound deer down.
Three hits and the thing had to bleed to death.
BRI slugs won't expand worf a hoot either but accurate they are.
2 inches and better at 100 is the Rule rather than the exception.
Honestly they are good only to about 75 yards.
All the other 24 $ a 5 pack slugs are pretty much a waste of money.
You buy them. They HAVE to shoot, you just spent 24 bucks, right?
So you get ONE three shot group of 2 inches at 100 and pronounce yourself king of all slug shooters.
That's why:
1) you never see pics of actual two inch or better groups at 150 yards.
2) you ALWAYS get measured groups like this " all slugs would hit a softball at 100".
3) or..... we set up clay bird in the butts and broke them at 150 yards with Super Duper Slugs. That's cause of the dirt and stones kicked up that broke the clay bird.
The slug MISSED by 6 inches.
Oh, and ya wanna see pics of 200 yard slug groups at 200?
Don't hold your breath.
Two years ago we bought a 4 X 8 ft. plywood and set it up at 200.
We made a 6 inch red paint circle in the middle.
We mostly missed low. Real low.
Over on s.g. world I challenged anyone to post pics of 200 yard 2 inch or better groups.
Still waiting for the pics.
Want to minimize cost yet remain effective?
Most deer are shot in the woods at under 70 yards.
Get an 870 pump with GOOD sights, a case of Brenneke K.O. slugs and learn what it WON'T do then go kill deer at 10 with slugs that cost a buck eighty-seven a 5 pack.
Of course you MUST learn to set up your swtich barrel slugger so it throws slugs, not shot.
It's easy, you just have to get off yer arse and learn and do it.
My BEST groups?
Smoothie Remington 870 at 100 yards with Winchester foster slugs inside 2 inches.
If there is any real interest in making a slug gun I'll teach you all what I know.

Y'all better give that Dixie sight a hard look see too.
And learn to use a tape measure for measuring groups.
......."kept all shots inside a soccer ball" won't do it.

Interesting that you feel it happens only in really cold weather.  I shot sabots for years and had my share of mystery flyers that occured for no apparent reason.  Whether it was the first, second, third, fourth or fifth shot, somewhere in that sequence (on many occasions) I'd get a flyer.  And while I've read that many people pooh-pooh the idea of the vast majority of flyers as just poor shooting, I've seen the issue addressed in enough articles and books, not to mention experienced shooters addressing it, plus my own experiences, that I'm quite confident it occurs on a regular basis.

Personally, I do most of my hunting in areas that 75 yards is a long shot so the old foster slug suits me fine and I don't even fool with saboted ammo anymore.  If I do hunt where longer shots are a possibility, I pull out my muzzleloader.

I agree with everything you've said.  I've yet to see posted examples of two inch or better groups @ 150 yards (much less good groups @ 200 yards) with any gun  or ammo (regardless of cost) that proves it can be done on a consistent basis.

I have spent a FORTUNE on slug's the last year. I still have yet to find one that My USH likes consistently..Thumbhole stock..Nice Nikon Omega.. Called them. They swear that it will shoot 3"groups at 200yds with the new Rem Accu tip slug's... Another $17 a box experiment? I dont think so. My old Marlin will stack them in there 2" all day long at 100 yds. I am tired of all the hype also. I am going to just start leaving the shot gun at home.. My smokeless pole will be the gun of choice. Drop

Im trying to decide on a new slug gun give me some advice. Im looking at either a Rem.870 cantilever or a mssberg 930 slugster. Anyone shoot slugs out of either.

I have an 870 with a hastings cantilever barrel. Mine shoots really well. The 870 is also one of the most well built and reliable shotguns ever made so you can't go wrong with it. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the mossberg because those are good guns too, but the vast majority of the slug hunters I know carry an 870.

I also have the 870 with 20" Hastings cantilever barrel. I epoxyed the barrel to the reciever and really don't think I need the mag cap on! It"s very accurate with BRI, Hastings, Lightfields IDS, and 525 Lyman handloads. I wouldn't have epoxyed the barrel if I didn"t think the gun wouldn't holed up to slugs.
RIP Mike. Died on July 14th, around 2am, with his family at his side, he went peacefully to be with god.

Most of the accuracy problems with the faster slugs and the ush is barrel length. The barrels are 24 in. long unless you have a youth model barrel. I to spent a fortune shooting expensive fast slugs, did a lot of re search and spent a small fortune on the ush I shoot trying to find a combination that is consistently accurate. I't got so bad I would take a rifle with me to the range that I knew would shoot groups under 1" at 200 to make sure it wasn't me. A friend cut 2 in. off his ush 12 ga. with a pipe cutter and did a back yard re crown. Next time we wen't to the range he showed me his handy work and the gun shot alot better that day than it ever had. I finaly decided after a dissapointing range session that we'd covered ALL the bases and there had to be a design problem with the gun. We had fired 6 diff. slug guns that day, went back to the shop and while cleaning them we measured all barrel's. None but the ush were over 21 or 22in..
I ordered a youth model barrel for my 20 ga, problem solved. Gun doesn't care if or how the forend is held and is consistent day to day. With a  24 in. barrel and fast slugs the gun starts to recoil before the slug leaves the barrel. Check the lightfield/tar hunt web site, tar hunt barrels are long to. There article on shooting techniques talks about consistent fore end hold to increase accuracy.
In my opinion those long barrels are responsible for 80-90% of "flyers". That was what I found with my gun anyway, results may vary.
