rumor on savage 99
« on: March 25, 2008, 10:58:03 AM »
Is it true the model 99 is coming back ,heard a rumor on it or is someone fooling with us?
I enjoy collecting guns, swaping and staying up on all the newest models. I deer, quail, squirrel and rabbit hunt.

its someone fooling with us. there is no way that savage, who prides itself on manufacturing reasonably priced firearms, would bring back a model that with todays costs would have to run 1300 dollars or better. manufacturing costs were high when it was produced and i dont think they will want to retool and brig it back. as much as i love the 99 and would love to see it come back i am afraid we will never see its return.

I have read several places where a Savage insider has said they are considering it. I am sure it will not be the same as the 99 we all know and love... Look at the Browning T-Bolt old vs new.
Marlin and Browning both sell a bunch of lever actions, Why wouldn't Savage consider redesigning the 99 to be easier to make and assemble?

Didn't they try a "cheap" version of the 99 already?  I hope they don't do that.  A design as fine as the '99' deserves good manufacturing.  I would rather scrimp and save to get an excellent gun where the 99 is concerned.

A number of years ago, maybe 5 or so, I read in a magazine an interview with a Savage executive. He said one of the "favorite" things to do to a new engineer was to give him/her an assignment to "figure out" how to make the 99's again, at a reasonable cost. None, so far, could come up with a plan. The last small batch of the factory 99's were made in Italy, I believe, or maybe just assembled there with left-over parts.
I think if Savage were to come up with a new design, it should be given a different name then "99".

I wish they would re-introduce them again.  I'd buy one in .358 in a heartbeat, as long as it had a tang safety.

I believe some of the last ones Savage made utilized receivers cast in Spain by Star. I have a old 99F made in 55. It is a fine weapon but it isn't perfect. The receivers were contoured by hand and done "to gauge". That leaves alot of room for variation. Mine is off enough that I cant mount a scope upon it without using all elevation in the scope to find zero.

No one is messing with you.  I saw a letter from a Savage representative on another web site.  Out of respect to our host I won't post it but if you PM me I'll be happy to give it to you.  No details were given as far as date or how they intend to produce it but the letter came from a trusted source.
Personally I like to see it in 260 Rem with a synthetic stock.

No way!

If it's true, sign me up for a 250 and a 300! Just PLEASE don't mess with it!! Build it like the "good" classics were done. We'll figure out how to pay for them if you build them.

Count me for 2 sold for sure! OK, maybe 3 (make that 2 x 250's and a 300) !!

I noticed one pictured in their 2008 catalog on page 46 I just got my coursoty up and I read the letter thing.  If they bring it back out I will take three one in 250, 300, and 308.   My grandfather had a 300 which my aunt took.  It was to be mine.  I reallyhope it happens.
