looking at either a Remington .308 vsf lh or a savage .308flp lh. what would you buy? I'm looking for the quality here. the cost doesn't matter.

If cost doesn't matter then it's a matter of your taste. I'd buy a Savage because I like them more.

You're going to get many opinions but it's your $$. Like Dave said, if funds aren't a problem, comes down to taste. Unlike Dave, I prefer Big Green, not that you couldn't tell anyways

I am a big Remington fan myself also. Can't go wrong with the 700 action. I see it now this is going to be a very long thread with a lot of bashing going on.

I've got several of both.......both are fine guns.......If you don't mind spending more money then I'd probably buy.....the Remington......if your looking for value, then I'd buy the Savage.......

If you're looking for a rifle to buy and shoot then either will be a fine choice.

But if you're looking to customize later down the road then the Savage wins hands down. Both rifles have tonnes of aftermarket support, kinda like the small block Chevy. But where the savage excels is that you can do just about anything imaginable to one WITHOUT paying a gunsmith a dime. A real DIY'ers dream.

Being a Ruger kinda Guy I guess I can give an unbiased opinion, I would take the Savage because what I have seen lately they are about the best outa the box shooter out there right now for the price.

I feel the over all quality of the Remington's is better. That's just me though. I can tell you they sure do shoot though. Here is a target I shot with my SPS Varmint 243 at 300 yards. The group measures 7/8". Dale

That's nice, Great shooting......BUT...... that's only ONE group What do the others look like? What kind of average at 300yds? and where are the other two shots?

Right now my Savage/Stevens Frankenstein is running an average 2.1inch 5 shot group size at 300M (328yds)

OTHER rifles can shoot great too. If you had two of these rifles side by side and asked me to bet money on which would shoot better the new rem or sav varmint rifle I simply wouldn't take that bet as both rifles are equally matched

One shooting measuring 1/10th of an inch better at 300 yards shouldn't be a deal breaker unless you're really that anal. They will all do the job so it comes down to taste and what you think feels better and looks better. I have no interest in showing up to a range with a Savage, that's just me. Others wouldn't show up with a Remington, it goes round and round. I was born and raised on Remmy and am not about to change. Just mentioning that because it goes back to the whole "taste" thing and who you know and what they shoot.

I love the 700 action, and they generally come with better stocks unless you get the cheapo SPS variants(some like them, I cannot stand them). I do my own trigger jobs so that's a wash for me. Lightening them is like riding a bike after you do it several times.

Talk to friends/relatives who shoot and hunt and put credence in what they tell you. If you have no formed opinion on either one, well you've got quite a decision to make

The VSF is an awesome rifle, with that I'm off to bed.

You see a whole lotta custom rifles built on Remington 700 actions and clones. You rarely --I've never seen one myself-- see a custom rifle built on a Savage action. The Remington holds it value better (I'm told, if I ever sell a rifle, I'll find out

) The Remington certainly looks a lot better.

My suggestion: go to a big box sporting goods store and have them lay one of each on the counter. Pick up and handle each one. See how they come to the shoulder and such. One of them will whisper "take me home". If it's the Savage, pay the man, put it under your coat and slink out; if it's the Remington, pay the man, put that Big Green box over your shoulder so's everybody can see it and strut out.

There are a few differences that stand out to me.
$$$$
Rate of twist. Savage 1-10" or Remington 1-12"
Fluted or not.
Nice pretty stock form the factory. Or black all business look.

Also I don't see LH listed anywhere on the Remington.

I agreed with this until it got to the point of "slinking out" of the store if you buy the Savage ...

I suggest also that you go to a big store with lots of rifles and start shouldering them, holding them, and caressing them. You will then know the answer to your posted question. We can spend countless hours posting targets and trash talking the the rifle we like the least. My most accurate rifle is a Savage 10FP that can shoot really good, consistent groups. But then again, I do not own a Remington at the time. I think valid points have been made on both sides of the fence. That darn Remington that Nonya has posted pictures of has cost me some sleep in the past several weeks but I still think I am going with an older Rem 788 ... a blast from the past.

It tickles me to see guys think that if you don't spend alot of money on a rifle it's not worth a darn. Kinda the same thinking from those magnum-nuts that think you can't kill a 150 lb deer unless you have a super duper fat nasty magnum. I say it's all about making up for OTHER things lacking.

The three Savages I have shoot ALMOST as good as my $1200 rifles. True, my high dollar Sako will shoot a ragged hole but so will my $400 Tikka...and my little 7mm-08 Savage will shoot 1/2 inch 5 shot groups.

I have less money in all three of my Savages than in one Sako so I would say Savage is a very good deal in a rifle. The bottom line is you will be spending your money so find the one you like and happy shooting!!!

Why not get your brother-in-law to win a nice Rem BDL 270 and sell it to you cheap. Then go to a gun store that is looking to get rid of their Stevens 200 30-06 and buy it too. Two rifles for the price of the Rem new. Now you have a wood stock rife for sunny days and a synthetic stock for not so nice days. Hey it worked for me. Still breaking them both in but so far the Stevens has been the better shooter but with all due respect the Rem is smoother and better looking. Once I replace the aluminum bases on the Rem. it will probably shoot better also.

I have been struggling with this same question . savage has a 24in bbl Remington has 26in bbl .what are the advantages / disadvantages of the different BBL length's and twist rate's regarding the 308win , superdown

I don't have a dog in this fight as I don't own a Savage at the present time, I do however own a Rem CDL. I owned a Savage in 22-250 a few years ago and the worst group it ever shot was 3/4" for five shots, I shot quite a few five shot groups of under 1/2" with this rifle. At the present time I own three 243's and two 6mm's, and shoot them all quite a bit. I can honestly say the Rem CDL 243 is the least accurate of them all. It is the only rifle I have never been able to shoot at least one 1/2" five shot group with. That isn't to say it is inaccurate but it usually averages right around 3/4" for five shot groups with its favorite loads. My Ruger 77's in 243 and 6mm are more accurate, my 788 6mm is more accurate and my Churchill 243 is more accurate then the Rem CDL. All of my rifles are setup the same with good triggers, good bedding and the best handloads I can work up for each rifle so I am comparing apples to apples. It is as has been said over the years "Handsome is as Handsome does" and I have said before to a friend, Remingtons may be a better looking rifle but I feel Savages are more accurate. I do have to agree with the poster that said what matters is the long run average of a rifles accuracy and not just one or two groups. A lot of people say the Savages are ugly because of the barrel nut but to me the SPS is an ugly rifle. I have picked them up and I hate the stock plus the matte finish they put on them and I won't own one.

After reading so much about the almost "magical" accuracy of Savage rifles I finally gave in and in late 2006 bought a 12BVSS in .223. I owned a 700 LTR .223 at the time too. And had owned 3 other varmint/tactical 700s prior.

The main advantage of the Savage out of the box was the trigger - at 2.25lbs was better than any of the 700s I have owned. However ,It would not adjust below that. I had a Sharp Shooter Supply trigger installed set at 13oz. On my 700s I install a Jewell.

I am far more pleased with the performance of the 700LTR over the Savage 12BVSS. About two good groups in a row is the most I can ever fire from the Savage before fouling issues appear. It has shot some impressive groups for me but just not consistently.

The 700LTR will fire group after group very consistently and the accuracy has been better than any other factory rifle I have ever owned or fired. I decided to add another 700 last Oct. , the 1 in 12" twist 700SPS and installed it in a HS stock.

The Savage does have the advantage of easy barrel swaps. I may change barrels later or simply trade it off.

700 223, either fire lap or hand lap the Savage barrel. You're not out a lot of $$$ and it may fix the problem.

Out of the 2, I would say Remington. That said, however, take a good look at Tikka - my favorite "mid-priced" rifle which is in the same price category as remington, although Savage is getting up there in price too.

I have shot Savage M110s in 223, 243 (2), 270, 30-06 (2), and 300 Win Mag. All were plenty accurate "as-is" to hunt with with factory ammunition and some were "holy crap" accurate. I don't remember any shooting much over 1" for three shots at 100 yards and some, like mine, will do even better. My personal Savage, a M110E in 243 that has seen it's share of rounds, is boring. I've shot 70, 80, 85, and 100gr bullets through it and have been able to find plenty of accuracy for my needs and then some. It has been very forgiving in load development and just a plain fun gun to shoot and hunt with.
