Basic Troy Weights
Step 1:
Divide the number of grains by 24 to get the number of pennyweights (abbreviated dwt).

Step 2:
Convert pennyweights to ounces troy by dividing by 20. There are 480 grains in an ounce troy.

Step 3:
Change ounces troy to pounds troy by dividing by 12. There are 240 pennyweights in a pound troy, and 5,760 grains in a pound troy.

Step 4:
Abbreviate pound troy as "lb t" and ounce troy as "oz t" to distinguish them from the more common avoirdupois pound and ounce.

I would have to run down and check but I believe that most of my canisters are marked as being 7,000gr...even the goex blackpowder...I think that this is the popular unit of measure from most manufactures
And also will corroborate with your powder scale.

Except in every reference I seen, says there are 437.5 gr.'s in an ounce, which still equals 7000.You'll have to let me know what source says 440 Mikey.

The poor guy asked how many grains of powder were in a pound. I'm always amazed at the number of responses to such a simple question. It was answered by mrloring in the second post. Each post thereafter adds to the confusion of those not so knowledgeable. In a way, I guess I'm surprised someone didn't take off on grams, which would have been more appropriate since some European manuals use grams as a unit of powder charge and bullet weight.

Ooooops! even the dictionary says 437.5. I think I got the 440 business from one of those pocket calendar do-dahs they give ya at the office every year for Christmas that has those tables of weights and measures in the back. Dang! Well, I'm just glad I never had to load up one full ounce of powder in any casings, I woulda been a few grains short of a full load (de de de................) Mikey.

Thanks too "Troy" I have a splitting headache and I can't figger out the number of grains of aspirin too take.
Other than that I have enjoyed the read and compliment all on thoroughly confusing me--which is not that much of a task.

Troy is alive in the U.S., albeit it's use is limited to a certain market. That being the precious metals market.

I agree, it could get somewhat confusing, but as long as it don't get derogatory, I see no harm. One never knows what us may be learned when idle frivolous and trivial bs is thrown about.

7,000 grains per pound of gun powder. Smokeless gun powder is loaded by weight. Black powder is loaded by volume rather then by weight. Different granulation's of black powder have different weights for the same volume of space occupied. That is why on your pwd measure for muzzleloaders 120 grains of 3fff will always chronograph faster then the 120 grains of 2ff or 1f.

I tried to count the grains of black powder in a pound. Stopped at 6789, my eyes were tired,from using a magnifying glass, my hand holding the tweezers was absolutely killing me .
