Lasik Eye Correction for Hunters?
« on: March 06, 2008, 07:15:30 PM »
I've got extreme near sightedness and have worn corrective distant glasses for over 45 years.  My last eye exam doctor told me though that I was a perfect candidate for LASIK eye correction surgery as both eyes currently are the same for correction with no astigmatism.
Has anyone had the surgery, how did it turn out, how long ago, and have you needed any subsequent corrections, what is your opinion on the operation?  I'm considering the operation as I've been told that the results are not as conclusive after a certain age and I'm getting close.
Greg lost his battle with cancer last week on April 2nd 2009. RIP Greg. We miss you.

A little late posting this.  A few years ago I had it done.  I will stop short of calling it a miracle, but I now see 20/20 from both eyes.  I had it done twice on my right eye.  The first time around it was 20/15, shortly after that I got a detached/torn retina(hereditary, not a result of the Lasik).  After the retina surgery I was nearsighted again in that eye, after about a year I was able to have the Lasik redone, now 20/20.  You will suffer mildly for a few days, and it took me about a year to get used to seeing things differently.

Now the drawbacks.  My eyes are a little dryer than before.  Lights have a weird halo or glare that I am completely used to now.  This also lessens as the scar tissue in your eye heals.  I am a jeweler and noticed that things up close were harder to focus on and now require magnification.  By up close I mean 2-3 inches from my nose, this doesn't effect normal up close things like reading or removing a splinter.

I would recommend getting several opinions about the surgery, form optometrists, opthomalogists or other eye surgeons who do not perform Lasik, before getting the surgery done.

Oh, yeah one more thing, you can smell your eyeball burning under the laser.

I don't know about the lasik, but I had radial keratonomy done on both eyes in 1992(I was 19) after wearing contacts. I had 20/400 vision which is almost legally blind. I had to have a touch up on both eyes but had 20/13 vision after the surgery and for several years. I now have 20/15 after 17years. It was the best $2000 I ever spent, and would do it again if I needed it and could.

a lady friend had it and her remarks were "it is like waking up with a new set of contacts in every morning"
