Almost every 6.5 cartridge (6.5x55, 260, 6.5 Creedmore, 6.5x47Lapua, 6.5-284) kills the 300 Winmag past 400 yards, with a lot less recoil. That's why the 6.5 has dominated long range shooting for about the last 10 years. And my stock Savage Model 12 in 223 (1-7 twist) is shooting Black Hills 77g SMKs very very well at 600 yards. Look at 600 yard Highpower matches. Dominated by 223. The AR put the M14 in 308 right out of business.

You mentioned reloading supplies. If you reload, what about going to a wildcat. Specifically, an Ackley Improved cartridge. That way, you could shoot factory ammo, if need be,  but have the option of custom ammo if you want. I have a T/C Encore rifle in 6mm A.I. that is a tack driver, but can shoot factory 6mm if I have to.  gypsyman

You see now I do learn something everyday. Do you mean to tell me that if I had my 243 Remington 700 chambered to an AI I could still shoot regular 243 rounds if I wished? Thanks Dale

And those .243 A.I. rounds look very nice....

My son has some tactical / varmint rifles that he regularly shoots  long distance, Both are Remington 700's, with expensive Leupold scopes and Badger ordinance rings an bases. The .308 is regularly shot to 1000 yards, and his .223 is new, so he holds that one to 800 yards. The occasional rabbit, crow, armadillo or red winged blackbird hasn't much of a chance.

I bought a Savage Model 12 in .308 that I'm going to start long range paper punching with...

You're welcome. I couldn't get it to upload to photobucket.....A friend of mine in Idaho sent me those dummies. Kinda has me hankering for one, now....

Yea the 243 AI has always peaked my interest. This guy here has a great set up and I have been admiring it for over a year now. http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek024.html        The way I upload photos is easy. If they are on your hard drive all you have to do when you make a post is click that tab that says additional options. Then click browse. You then can upload them directly from your hard drive. Dale

If I already owned a .223 6mm .243 .308 7mm08 .280 .270 .260  in a QUALITY BOLT GUN and planned on shooting alot then I would start with that.    If not I would go all out and go .338 lapua

I shoot long range for hunting.  I started with a 30-06.  Worked well out to 700 yards as for hitting the target.  Just did not have enough energy left after 500 ysrds for clean kills.  Moved up to a .338 Win Mag, Ruger MKII and TCR.  Even tho they killed clean out at 600 and 700 yards, I just was not happy with them. 

Today I shoot a .223 for coyotes and wolves during the winter out to 500 yards.  If I am going to be shooting beyond that, or if I am out hunting Moose or Bears, I carry a Weatherby Accumark in .338/378 Whby.
